Do Bay Leaves Even Do Anything?

I had trouble identifying the taste of bay myself, so I did an experiment. I made some bay tea. Steeped about 10 dried leaves in some hot water for 30 minutes. the taste was hard to describe. I would recommend you try it for yourself.

We put an absurd about into our Crawfish pot and our bugs are delicious.
So I say yes based on the portion we put in.....about 10x what's pictured.

I don't think 3-4 leaves add anything to a pot of gumbo. I don't use them.

They're great for spaghetti

You know, I kind of have the same kind of question about file. In gumbo, I don't really notice any thickening, unless you put in a ridiculous amount. And what is the flavor that it adds?
I have had a crawfish dish from the "Pie Man" in New Orleans that has a mystery flavor. I suspect it might be file.

This is how we had it growing up. Don't know if it makes a real difference but it does seem to taste better.

Make a pot of red beans without bay leaf.
See how that turns out.

They are excellent flavor enhancers for red sauces, soups, beans , stews, and...gumbos.

I've wondered this myself. What's the flavor like?

Very simple to find the taste.
Make a cup of rice with two bay leaves in the water. You'll instantly taste a difference.

I make a bay leaf pound cake from a Leibovitz recipe....you melt the butter & steep bay leaves for a while, then use the flavored butter to make the cake. A line of bay leaves at the bottom of the pan ends up on top when you unmold the loaf cake. It is a subtle but very distinctive taste. It is much more pronounced in the fresh leaves. I have a bay laurel hedge around my AC compressor....so I have & use lots of bay.

I use them only because I have some in the lazy Susan, though, I can't really tell if a few work in my gumbo or court billion or not.

Get one caught in your throat and you will forego the future subtle tastes of bay.

Growing up I was told not to eat them because they were poison and just there for flavor, lol.

I never use bay leaf. It's bitter. I don't like bitter.
An old girlfriend of mine got a by leaf stuck in the back of her throat. I've never seen someone choke that hard in my life. She said she thought she was going to die.
It was scary. And then absolutely hilarious. The person who cooked it didn't know to take the bay leaf out.

So it looks like bay leaves do at least 1 thing; show us people on twitter who don't know what a bay leaf is.

I love bay leaves in different dishes. I love the flavor. Not in gumbo though, Otis!
