Awesome, now bring back Norm and Jim Downey for the summer run, and this could be great!
Damn. Nevermind any excitement then.

It’s official — NBC has picked up a primetime version of “Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update,” which will have a four-week summer run, beginning Thursday, Aug. 10, at 9 PM
The half-hour telecast will feature “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che. Additional “Saturday Night Live” cast members will also make appearances.
“‘SNL’ is having its best season in a quarter of a century — how many shows can say that?! — so we didn’t want them to take the summer off,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “We’re thrilled to have Colin Jost and Michael Che continuing their unique brand of news with fresh ‘Weekend Update’ shows in primetime this August.”
So far this season, “Saturday Night Live” originals are averaging a 3.57 rating in adults 18-49 and 11.022 million viewers overall in “live plus seven day” averages from Nielsen Media Research. This makes it the show’s top-rated season at this point in eight years in 18-49 (since 2008-09) and most-watched season in 24 years (since 1992-93).
Versus year-ago averages, “SNL” is up +21% in adult 18-49 rating (3.57 vs. 2.94) and up 2.2 million persons or +26% in total viewers with 11.022 million.
Damn. Nevermind any excitement then.

Jost/Che? Great, more Trump bashing.
Seriously, it's not even comedy....half the time they are just ranting about him instead of making jokes.

This will not be good. Those guys just aren't good at weekend update. Or comedy really.

I haven't watched SNL in years

another Daily Show copycat

This will be awful. It won't work over 30 minutes.

They're going for the ratings while the iron is hot.
Fallon is losing audience because he can't do the political stuff as well as the others. SNL is on a ratings rise because politics is their bread and butter.
As Michael Corleone would say, "It's the smart move."

I'm honestly surprised that it's taken this long to happen. It would seem like with the success of The Daily Show and Colbert Report that they would have been attempted years ago.

One of SNL's handicaps is that they're once a week and WU deals with timely news. By the time they get to the jokes, every punchline has already been used on the daily shows and on social media.
At least this gives them a chance to hit some of the news of the early week before it gets stale.

They'll have to have an actual interview, which I'm not sure how these clowns will pull this off. The only 4 I would trust with that are Miller, Norm, Fallon, and Meyers. Fallon and Meyers won't do it for obvious reasons, nor would I really want them to. Miller and Norm I think would be your only rational options there because they are the only two as far as I know that can hold down an interview and do well.

I mean, Weekend Update is basically a 20-minute uninterrupted commercial free segment each show. Which is the equivalent of a half hour show with commercials. It'll be more than able to fill that quota.
That being said, you're usually jonesing for entertainment that late in summer with literally nothing on TV and a month til football and new cable and network programming returns to the air so I'm ok with this.

A good indication of mental illness is anyone who has watched SNL regularly in the last decade.

I'm pretty sure it's closer to 10 and 12 tops. They'll need a lot of padding.
Really, why not cycle out some of the old Weekend Update anchors. A new one every year? Just seems like this is a bad idea all around just doing those two that no one cares about. It's just "Bash Trump" for 30 minutes, which there are a half a dozen people who do better than them at that.

It's a summer series. So I don't think they are looking for a ratings giant.

I didn't have Meyers on there original and added him at the last minute on the post. Fallon and Meyers can somewhat interview, but the only actual good interviewers from the SNL roster are Norm and Miller. I think you'd need to add that talent in there for it to work.
And the rotating one sounds like it could be pretty good. People you could get in:
Jim Gaffigan
Craig Ferguson
Adam Carolla
Bob Saget
H. Jon Benjamin
Aisha Taylor
Lewis Black
Chris Rock
Jon Stewart
Bill Burr

Who says they want to do it? Dennis Miller works for Fox. They're not gonna let him do an NBC show and I doubt he would quit. NBC wouldn't bring in a conservative anyway. Norm left SNL on bad terms. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have good careers and don't need this. Maybe Colin Quinn would do it but I always though people didn't like him when he hosted.

Refer to my next post. Norm has been on SNL a few times since his departure (including his incredible monologue), but they kept him on a leash the whole time. Don Olymeyer is gone as well, who is the one that canned Norm over OJ. Norm would regardless be risky because I think he would certainly agree to it, but he might frick with them hardcore on one of the shows.
