It would cost a fortune to acquire Donovan or a similar big name coach for service and probably more than what they pay for O
No question. But it would be a little more understandable to pay top dollar for someone with the credentials of Donovan vs. those of Ogeron.

Sadly, I agree. But don't you have to ask the question, why not? Is LSU's athletic dept strapped for cash? Yes, you're still paying your old coach a good chunk of change, but the new guy (though still overpaid) is a relative bargain as far as SEC coaches go (of course that changes if you want to fire him thanks to Alleva's top notch job of negotiation significant buyouts if O is let go). On the basketball side, while you still overpaid for what Jones was worth, his salary was on the low end of SEC coaches.
LSU is turning a profit. If they are bringing in the most money in the department's history (as someone said in another thread) then why not pay for a top tier basketball coach? In recent years Bama, MSU, Tenn., Auburn all went out and spent some money to try to hire accomplished basketball coaches. Bama has the highest paid FB coach and the second highest paid basketball coach in the SEC. Is LSU such a broke dick athletic dept that they can't afford to pay big name coaches?

Maybe not, but the time to do it is now if they ever will.
They can do it next year, or 5 years from now. Or 10 or 20 years from now.

Need to significantly reduce your wet dreams and accept the fact that Joe Alleva will be making the hire. It come down to the free throw coach with a purple notepad.

Why? Do you prefer Alleva pursue less than the best because of the probability the best will say no.
How far down the pecking order should he go before you would approve approaching that coach? Should we just eliminate the top 15? Top 25?
For every one of those up and coming mid level 2 year wonders you think we should pursue there is a similar story of failure at Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Missouri and LSU.

Glad I skipped ahead to this post.
Of course, Donovan is not leaving the NBA.
I would hope the focus would be on realistic candidates.

Maybe you are correct, but what would they lose by inquiring? How do you know he is happy in the league? It is time to go large and make the decision what ever it takes will be done? There are no guarantees but it it is time to quit thinking any coach won't come to LSU. Look at the level of coaches hired by Tennessee, Mississippi State, and Alabama with far less tradition and history than LSU basketball.

Screw it. Let's revive John Wooden. Go big or go home.
