Basically, you took it and now you feel guilty.

I'd check his trot lines and crab/crawfish traps while I'm there.

But if I take their stuff, them I'm breaking the law too and could end up facing my own charges.

I would too, but the guy with the stand could have gotten mixed up and thought he was on his property, just like the kayak could have been some dude who plays paintball or some shite. I was just curious about the notion of respecting someone's property even if you are fairly well convinced they're breaking the law.

If you're on public land and you find things that are not illegal to have there, I don't see how you're convinced this guy is breaking the law. If you find someone's deer stand on your property, you know damned well they are breaking the law, whether they know it or not.

Not to mention leaving a deer stand in place on your own property is essentially encouraging the dude to continue poaching & trespassing. Which is not only bad for your lease but also a danger to anyone who hunts there and a risk of liability for whatever this poacher decides to do. And if I found a wallet with the stand, I might take it with me, but I'd give it (all of its contents intact) and the deer stand to the sheriff to prosecute him as a trespasser.

Dude, really? Really?

Stealing is stealing is stealing. Dont try to rationalize it.

I would have reported it to the proper authorities. If its not supposed to be there theyll confiscate it and try to locate its owner. If, after a certain amount of time, the owner cant be located they often times hand over the lost and found to the person who initially reported it. I have heard of this happening on many occasions.

you'd feel real stupid if you took it, and it ended up belonging to a warden who was using the suit to hide while looking for poachers.

Owner was probably killed by a black panther. Call the police ASAP.

Your logic reminds me of an old fishing joke

quote:

One morning, a husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap inside. Although not familiar with the lake, his wife decides to take the boat out for a relaxing read. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book.

Along comes a Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, "Good morning, ma'am. What are you doing?"

"I'm just reading a book," she replies.

"You're in a Restricted Fishing Area," he informs her.

"I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing," the wife says. "I'm just reading."

"Yes," the warden says, "But you have all the equipment. For all I know, you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up."

"For reading a book," the woman asks, in disbelief.

"You're in a Restricted Fishing Area, with all the equipment," he repeats.

"I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing," the wife repeats, agitated. "I'm just reading. I haven't been fishing, either."

"I'm going to take you in, and I'm going to write you up. There are no buts to it."

"If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault," the woman says.

"But I haven't even touched you," says the Game Warden.

"That's true," the woman begins, "But you have all the equipment. For all I know, you could start at any moment."

"Have a nice day ma'am," the Game Warden says, and he left.
