They definitely weren't known for their plush ride. But they were never designed (or marketed) for that.

I don't know but I had a 2004 and loved it. I had a bad stretch where I totaled 3 vehicles in a year and the 4 runner was the first to fall.

Yeah. Changing the timing belt/water pump every 80Kish miles is the only real maintenance needed on the 3rd gens

Limited 4x4 ones are bringing top dollar nowadays. I saw a black 2000 limited 4x4 at a dealership that was pristine with 120k listed for $15k. I'd bet money they got more than $10k for it. Actually thought about getting it for my little sister, but she wanted a car instead

How many miles you think you can legit on these bad boys. I had a '93 that must have been a lemon and went to shite after 120k. But I later inherited a Camry that I wound up hitting the 300k milestone on.
So, for the purpose of this thread, let's assume I'm not getting hosed on price. I'm debating between getting an
1) older '01 or '02 with around 200k. Benefit of that is I can pay cash and no note
2) '04 or '05 with around 150k. Could pay most down and finance just a few grand. Low note that would help build my credit score
3) suck it up and get a '10/'11 with less than 100k and have to finance 8-9 grand. Not that that's outrageous, I'm just trying to get debt free asap.
Need a decent looking beater that will last a couple years without having to throw a ton of money at it for keep up.

Gen 3 (option 1) fits the bill for that perfectly.

As long as its had the timing belt/water pumped replaced fairly recently you should be golden for even more than a couple years. The other great thing about these is they are so stupid simple to work on for basic things, especially with how complicated new cars are these days

It was made for utility, not to be a lifted FWD car (Murano).

I don't like the look of the 4th Generation models (2003-2009 model years) nearly as much as the 3rd Generation or 5th Generation.
Sales showed that as well, they went from selling 100K+ per year down to 19K in 2009... then back all the way to over 100K units sold in 2016.
So, with that said, if I was you I'd scratch option 2 first, and either go cash on a 3rd Generation 4Runner, or suck it up and finance a newer version. Really depends on how long you want to wait until you buy another one.

'03 was when they made the change to the larger body (4th generation). It is a completely different vehicle than before I owned a '99 and a '03. Older than '03 is the smaller version.
That being said...a late 90's 4runner that has been maintained will still have some good life left in it.
