quote:well yeah and that's why they tried what they did with SS
Now I like TP -- not as much as Wind Waker -- but I do like TP. The overworld is a bit sparse though.
but it was too much in the other direction. moving around a big open world gets boring without making it engaging. I like SS better because I think TP is just as linear, but they give you a big open field without any obstructions to just walk around
you have to do everything in the order intended same as SS. TP has one of the better dungeons in the series (the lakebed temple) but the dungeons in both games also give you the illusion of complexity and freedom, but they're pretty straight forward.
I like the dungeons in MM and BOTW (where the challenge is figuring out how all the moving pieces work) but I was kind of hoping for an old school NES dungeon where there isn't a central room, you can get lost and you have freedom like being able to use your key on a number of doors instead of just one.

but god dammit it's easy and the dungeons are the easiest and the most linear. I only really enjoyed the wind temple, and mostly enjoyed the mirror shield temple.
the rest of the temples kind of sucked but all of them were easy.

I still don't get why you refuse to "Edit" when you have additional thoughts on the same quote

I sometimes don't bother if I'm on my phone. A lot harder to do quotes then.

This doesn't have anything to do with what I said. Standards and expectations of the industry do not necessarily equate to more processing power. Switch being a capable machine while being portable is already a big differentiator. They just also needed to not have the long list of cons or missing features to go along with it.
But what standards, other than pure power specs, are problems for the Switch? Apparently the dev kits and software toolkits are all standard.
Cartridges vs. Disc is probably one, and that's a conscious decision to facilitate mobile capabilities. Anything else? Control is not a problem like it was for the Wii. What else?
quote:
It's not my job to come up with innovations for video game companies to try to attract an audience. Sony and MS each do their thing to attract people. They've dabbled in 4K, VR, motion controls, Streaming Games as a Service, and streaming (one of the best ideas Sony has ever had is the Share button on the DS4). That doesn't mean they have to do all of those things, but they could at least do things like cloud saves, multimedia apps, twitch streaming, etc.
I'll give you cloud saves, admittedly Nintendo is behind on online infrastructure. This has been the case for a long time. it's a problem, but anyone super upset that they didn't have it at launch was unrealistic. They are just now getting into robust paid services, it's a fair complaint, but cloud saves function almost purely as disaster recovery for the most part it's not a huge problem imo. Nor should it be expected, again, it's only this gen that consoles were released with cloud saves, while nice, they are far from standard, multi-generational features.
I mean, the rest are power (4k, VR) and media experiences (twitch, media apps), and none of them are proven console sellers. They are nice additions and extra features at best. I mean, yeah it'd be nice to have Netflix, but I have a dozen devices with Netflix. I don't get fervor over that one.
quote:
Not to mention you're discounting Nintendo's strength which is the ability to draw upon incredible nostalgia and decades of great games that could (and should) already be available for download. I would get a Virtual Console subscription with the ability to stream/download these games in a heartbeat.
Naaa, I get this. But this is not a standard, or a missing feature. It's a missed opportunity. And yes, I wish they did it. But I don't fault them for NOT doing it. I have own many products products from many companies that don't do things EXACTLY the way I want. You'd get it, I'd get it but we don't know the whole story.
Not only that, we have no idea how hard this is, and how far the investment goes. Again, the only way you or I know it's a gold mine is that we assume. We have no data to back it up. Maybe they did the research and found out the revenue doesn't line up with research? I mean, if you have data that it's a no brainer, I'd love to see that.
Same thing for making a similarly powered console.....
quote:
Of course. The most important part of any games console is the games. This the most important reason why people will buy your games. You have the games that people want to play, people will buy the console. Nintendo's problem is that you need more than a robust 1st party to make an impact, you need a good 1st party + 3rd party support to win (ala PS4 this gen). If you don't produce any big, meaningful games for your console, but check all of the other boxes, then you have the Xbox One. It's a solid console and doing ok, but still getting outsold 2:1.
I said this in another thread, but they've most likely read the tea leaves. The only way that console is successful and profitable is if they gain the majority of the market share back. They'd have to cover over 50% of the market for it to make any kind of sense. And with the way third parties work now, that would be near impossible.
I just don't see that path, I think you guys do, but I don't. The gamecube was similarly powered and got crushed. Just like you mentioned the Xbox is getting crushed now, there's no evidence that the automatic recipe for success is to match specs and chase power.
And, at least for this gen, matching specs would mean giving up the portability.
I mean this:
quote:
Standards and expectations of the industry do not necessarily equate to more processing power.
Directly relates to this:
quote:
Nintendo's problem is that you need more than a robust 1st party to make an impact, you need a good 1st party + 3rd party support to win (ala PS4 this gen).
3rd Parties, most likely, are not going to make high quality, AAA games for the Switch unless it's easy to port and similarly powerful. Right?

Can't say I'm surprised. They are the only company out three that can't afford to sell the console at a loss.
So the cut back big time on the quality

my brain gets focused in on completing a thought or finishing a task and i'm wired in
which is also why I'm excited about the switch. I have to be at a spot I feel some resolution to a task. so it's hard for me to just drop what i'm doing. video games, work, chores, etc. if I see things that I feel are unsymmetrical, if someone has a pant leg stuck between their shoe and ankle
the shite that gives me anxiety.

How many "it's just going to be patched" issues are they, and has nintendo actually come out and said they're going to do anything about them?
Have they stopped patching and bug fixing Xbox or Sony OS's? Or are those completely built out 100% no bugs, no needs at this point?
Oh wait, no

Performance and general improvements Download performance Optimizations to game and app downloads have made background downloads more resilient to intermittent connectivity issues. Blue-ray app Xbox is the first game console to feature Dolby Atmos, and game developers are excited about using the new capabilities to make their games richer and more engaging. Atmos support for the Blu-ray app on Xbox has been available in Preview and is now releasing to GA – and we’re very excited now to offer Atmos support to games on Xbox One and Windows 10. I don't get why they have to improve things if they are perfect?

Xbone just recently gained the ability to play 360 games. PS4 cant play Ps3 games
I would hope so since the 360 and the one are both x86 architecture. Should have had it from day one.
Will be damn near impossible for Sony to do it due to PS3 being power PC architecture and ps4 being x86.

I'd be fine if it's features that just aren't working properly. But were talking about functionality that they clearly had no intention of being there but will now have to patch in because everyone is like "what the hell".

None of us know what the intention is, however, everyone is aware that the launch was probably accelerated for earnings call and because the WiiU was a big failure.
And so far, it's two things: Cloud Saves and SDCard-to-system transfer. The first is hardly standard, the second is a minor inconvenience at worst right now.
Honestly, I wouldn't hold your breath on cloud saves( nor are they necessary), the second I assume a patch in due time. These aren't "massive problems." If in 4-6 months we still can't move things from SDcard to system, that would be a problem.

GTA Vice City and San Andreas are the same as GTA 3. GTA 4 feels different from the previous games. GTA 5 does as well.

What is so funny? If it is the above post, I don't understand.
There are in fact multiple people having dock scratch problems. The thought that Nintendo pulled it was a good thing. Because it meant they acknowledged they needed to fix it.

one person checking a link and making a post on reddit around 6 am spiraled into "Nintendo pulled the dock off the estore" across multiple sites in a couple of hours. thats funny.
