So with all this bitching about it being expensive, is there a niche available to exploit?
Yeah, you just have to move the people closer to the mountains or the mountains closer to the people.
Using a "Spring Break" package from Vail.com, I can get a room at The Lodge @ Vail for the low price of $5k. Check in on Monday, 3/6, and check out on Friday, 3/11. Flights for 4 from New Orleans on Southwest will be $1850, so I'm at $6850 just to exist there for 5 days.
For $8800 I can fly a family of 4 to Jamaica and stay at a Beaches resort in Negril on those same dates, and it's all inclusive.

Megaresort season passes are hurting the small resorts
When you can pay $600 for a season pass to all Vail resorts you arent gonna spend $50 a day on a lift ticket to go to a small place that you are bored with after a few hours.

I tore an ACL at 36 and it wasn't that big of a hassle after the surgery.
Some people are just lazy when it comes to PT and a repaired ACL becomes a chronic issue because they skip the PT after a few visits.

That's been Vail's business model for the last several years -- they're buying up SOME small, cheaper, local hills and adding them to the season pass.

I wouldn't use that shithole Jamaica as a better option
But point is you can do a lot of things for what it cost to ski for a week with a family

Let's be honest, that isn't real skiing, is it even a mountain?
If you like skiing, yes it's skiing. If you like Disney-level ski trips, then no, maybe not.
I've got a season pass at Perfect North Slopes, and I took a couple of vacation days to Caberfae a couple weeks ago. I like skiing.

A little research can save you money and avoid the crowds.
Ski clubs can get pretty decent pricing as well (and the club doesn't necessarily need to be anywhere near you). If you like Western trips, check out any reasonably local clubs you can find.

Can't you just rent some snowboards and boots and go hike up a hill? You'll figure it out.
You can. We ski into the summer off some of the trails and glaciers. But you need to know the terrain well.

I enjoy skiing for a day. More than that and I get bored. Last time I was in Colorado I skied for a day and snowmobiled for a day. The snowmobiling was cheaper and those things haul arse. Plus we had a nice private picnic on a secluded mountain top.

And its brilliant because those people at the shitty resort in michigan buy the season pass, ski a few days at the crap Michigan resort but then make the expensive trip to Vail once a year and enjoy $10 beers on the mountain.

The thing killing skiing is there is just too much to do. College football tickets, beach trips, New York, vegas, saints tickets, golf, and on and on and on.
When I was growing up I knew people who went skiing every year. It was their trip. Now people try and do everything. It is the Facebook era and everyone wants pictures of themselves living the good life.
Skiing isn't convenient to much of the country and people are spending too much money on everything else.

Literally went skiing last week, had a blast, spent under $1000 and skied for 4 days.

So the skiing industry is pricing itself out of the market as traditional skiers age and ski less, whilst trying to attract a younger crowd that is too debt ridden to afford the high price of skiing? What a shame. I love skiing although I don't get to go as often as I'd like. sad they've priced it out of the reach of most people. Same for Vegas. I was there last December during the NFR and every criticism posted here is dead accurate.

I completely agree with this. My preference is to visit the resort towns during the summer when lodging prices are cheaper. I like to ride the lift up the mountain and mountain bike down. Also spend time fly fishing, horseback riding, etc.
One of my regrets is that I never learned to ski. I know I would have enjoyed it. But you are spot on - summers in the mountains are fabulous. Lots to do.. hiking, mountain biking, jeeping and a local brewery in every town.
I saw a great tee shirt in Jackson Hole...

I'm going back just so I can buy the shirt !

Good, get these shitty redneck skiers out of my way when I'm trying to bomb some fresh powder.

Think I may buy a few of these properties when they close

It's cool, but it is also expensive as hell. Therein lies the rub.
This. Looking at a couple grand per day for a family of four.
