Industry expert says one third of U.S. ski resorts to shutter

Notwithstanding the colossal snow dump the Sierras have seen this season... Many resorts around the country are praying for snow and visitors.
Is skiing no longer cool?
Related note... Across the lower 48, February has recorded 4,492 record hi temps and only 29 record lows.

It has gotten wayyyy too expensive. Same issue golf faces.

Megaresort season passes are hurting the small resorts
When you can pay $600 for a season pass to all Vail resorts you arent gonna spend $50 a day on a lift ticket to go to a small place that you are bored with after a few hours.

A smaller ski resort, Paoli Peaks, in Southern Indiana had to shorten their season because it's been so unseasonably warm.
But that shite can be expensive as frick if you're trying to make a legitimate vacation out of it for a family of 4 or better. They've priced themselves out of their own market by trying to attract nothing but OT ballers.

In Seattle I live about 90 miles from a lot of ski resorts... can go skiing at any time I want as its only an hour and a half drive to places like Crystal Mountain
Yet I only go once or twice a year because its too expensive. Lift tickets $75 for one day. I don't buy my own skiis because I don't go enough to justify the expense. So I rent skiis there and thats another $50
$125 for a day of skiing. That's just too much to do too often, and thats for someone who lives near a slope
Factor in all those who dont live near slopes and can only go when they take a vacation

Injuries man, last ski trip I went on with some friends a buddy tore his ACL just standing there taking a picture for some people who asked him for one and a snowboarder crashed into him. My group used to go skiing with our women twice a year and haven't been back in 2 years when we saw the hassle our friend went through trying to work with a torn ACL. Its one thing to tear your ACL when you're an athlete and you can sit around and do nothing all day, its another when you're a small business owner and its a giant pain in the arse problem to worry about potentially having

I agree that it's just like golf now days. some of the slope areas have lost their minds on what they want to charge for someone to stay and ski for 4-5 days. It's almost not worth going anymore.

Took my wife and our 3 kids to Telluride for a week and it cost over $7000. Went to Copper Mountain two years ago and it was almost 6k. Won't be going again anytime soon.

Hell, my wife just puked up $250 to go see somebody sing for 2-3 hours in Shreveport next month.

I love it. Try to go once or twice a year. It is too expensive though. Last month I did Keystone and Loveland and just in lift tickets I paid $270 for 3 days. Really is too much.

Its becoming like Las Vegas
Las Vegas doesn't give a shite about the typical middle class tourist anymore. All Las Vegas cares about these days is reaching that hypothetical millionaire millenial. All the new hotels and gimmicks and development in Las Vegas these days is about reaching that demographic
Same with resorts. It's a race to appeal to the ultra wealthy and no fricks are given about anyone else

I took the wife and 4 kids to Crested Butte for a week between Christmas and New Years. First time anyone of us ever been and wanted to experience it. The cost for 6 people to rent equipment, 2 days of ski school, plus lift tickets was outrageous. Total trip cost 15k and I will never ever go back.
In my opinion if they would make it cheaper for people learning... (not even using the lift tickets) more people would learn to ski and they would get way more repeat costumers.

Agreed. It wasn't long ago that Vegas was one of the cheapest vacations you could take. Cheap airfare, cheap accommodations, cheap food. It's almost cheaper to go to the Bahamas now

They've really priced out most families. You're looking at 1k a day for a family of 5 just for lift, ski rental , food, etc

While we're on ridiculousness and Vegas have hotels always charged resort fees? I get mine waived when I go to Vegas but are people paying for rooms really paying $40-50/day resort fee? Is that just a new gimmick
