In the Episcopal Church "Lenten Sacrifice" is at the parishioner's personal option. However, it you do it, you do it as an act of true sacrifice and not as a novelty.
I have seen more people make an arse out of themselves over this thinking they were being "cute".

But I hear some Catholics talking noise about still doing what they "gave up" on sundays.
Technically allowed. Sundays are feast days and are not part of Lent.
I never used it. Feels too much like a loophole.

Booty Hole Sex with Dirty Mike and the Boys. I won't miss the sex so much as I will miss the witty repartee.

Shame you choose to make fun of this subject. God bless you.

Serious question...not Catholic. Why is meat forbidden on Friday? I am sure there is a reason.

i love the people who think it's about giving up meat and poultry.
It has nothing to do with that, it's about giving up things in your life. Such as cigs, alchy, etc.
My favorite is a guy i went to HS with, who is a super shithead(cheats on wife, shithead father), but once he gets the ashes on his forehead he's all good in Gods eyes. LOL When i see him with the ashes, i literally have to turn away, to keep myself from laughing.

The point of giving up meat on Fridays is to make a small sacrifice to remind yourself that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice by dying on the cross for our sins. The tradition dates back to early Rome, because fish was considered a food for the poor and red meats were a luxury.

Sometimes it's not about giving something up but trying to do a little more.

I know several Protestants and non-believers that give something up for lent.

So the guy you describe here is a hypocrite. Same kind of person who wails away in church or pretends to be holier than thou and so proud of the cross of ashes on his forehead he goes to Mass in the morning so everyone can see it. I don't do that. I go Wednesday night (even though it's no longer a Holy Day of Obligation) so I don't wear mine like a badge of honor. I prefer to keep my faith a private thing.
I may be Catholic...but I will always keep one thing in mind above all: "Faith has never killed anyone, religions have killed many a person". The same can be said for arguments etc.

You really think Jesus gives a shite if you give up something for 40 days? Pretty sure he'd rather you just be a good person.
