The new galaxy is only 230 trillion miles and 40 light years away!

It's hard to wrap your mind around that. 230,000,000,000,000 miles and 40 years at light speed.

When, if ever will we have spacecraft that can travel at light speed?

That's 186,282 miles per second. That's 670,615,200 mph. The moon is only 238,900 miles from Earth, so less than 2 seconds to reach the moon at that speed.

I just don't see it happening in my lifetime.

It won't happen ever. Scientists are hoping to one day travel at 10-11% of light speed.

And they didn't find a new galaxy they found a new solar system.

pretty sure we have a better chance of bending space than ever reaching light speed

NASA can see 7 planets 40 lights years away, but will not disclose any pictures from the backside of the our Moon.

Impossible. The only way would be some type of wormhole entanglement discovered thru quantum mechanics

Physics probably won't allow us. As we approach light speed our mass increases and we don't have the energy to continually propel our ever increasing mass. We will have to get creative without attaining light speed.

Well, Chevrolet is working on a new engine for the Cruze.

It's a start.

It's very convenient that we have a moon.

Well it's physically impossible to travel at light speed, so there's that.

Time slows down as you approach light speed. So if you left the earth at or near light speed and then tried to come back after a substantial amount of time, you would technically find yourself in the future.

Did someone see an explosion through a telescope?

If you are traveling the speed of light inside of a space craft, could you throw a football forward and make it travel faster than the speed of light?

No way. Like the comment above. Maybe 10%, which is enough.

The true way to travel is to find a way for creating a stable wormhole or bending space, those things could be possible. It's hard to imagine what we can do with a couple thousand more years of scientific advancements.

In an attempt to wrap my mind around it, I came up with the following:

According to google, the average moderately active person takes around 7,500 step/day. If you maintain that daily average and live until 80 years of age, you'll have walked about 216,262,500 steps in your lifetime. Doing the math, the average person with the average stride living until 80 will walk a distance of around 110,000 miles

If we assume that every person alive in the world today, say 7 billion people, walks this amount of miles... it comes out to approximately 131 light years of distance walked.

So everyone in the world combined walking distance in their lives could almost make two roundtrips to that new solar system.

You can't really reach light speed, it's against the laws of physics

Approaching light speed is actually a theory for traveling to the future. For instance, if you can never reach light speed according to the laws of physics, if you are on a vehicle travelling 99% the speed of light, the closer the vehicles gets to approaching light speed the slower the objects in the vehicle move so that they will never reach light speed. This means that everything outside the vehicle is moving in normal time while time within the vehicle is crawling

Light year travel may have to rely on a warp drive, warping space and literally riding a wave of time and space, the vehicle technically remains still while time and space move around it( Or we could figure out worm holes

are we assuming the speed of light is a constant or variable?

As dumb as it sounds, Star Trek (and other media) were right in that we will never advance as a species until the entire world works together towards a common goal. We can't even balance a damn federal budget, much less travel close to hyper speed or even dream up a warp engine.

We're talking hundreds of years off from anything like that happening unfortunately. No one posting here will be alive to see it.

We can take solace in the fact that 1900-2020 will have produced as much tech and advancements as it did.

I would be happy if we could just work on our energy problems for now. Current battery life and fossil fuels are horrendously inefficient.
