So Asao Inoue believes that proper grammar use is racist and the university will not penalize improper grammar even when used in English writing classes.

I'm sure graduates from Inoue's program will have no problem writing proper resumes and grammatically correct cover letters to obtain real jobs in that racist world out there. Parents, beware what you pay for!

Is there an ongoing effort to translate school textbooks into Ebonics?

You should add that it's UW-Tacoma that this article is talking about.

That would be like a professor from LSU- Eunice saying something and it reported that LSU - the flagship - was saying it.

The University of Washington is one of the best research institutions in the world.

If we officially sanction the type of spellling and grammar I see on Social Media from young, inarticulate people, I've got a better shot at understanding Manderin in a Louyang dialect.

As a person who often has poor grammar, I can get behind this.

I would also like all of my papers in school to retroactively reflect this change. I may be white, but I'm a victim too.

I live in Tacoma. The black people don't even use Ebonics.

I think our American grammar changes over time. With Twitter, text and other internet outlets it is getting worse.

My grammar is already terrible

Does anyone bother to point out that we finished basic grammar in the 8th grade? If a student cannot complete their course work with correct basic grammar, then they don't belong in college.

Not just grammar. Everything, apparently...
quote:

The writing center works from several important beliefs that are crucial to helping writers write and succeed in a racist society. The racist conditions of our society are not simply a matter of bias or prejudice that some people hold. In fact, most racism, for instance, is not accomplished through intent.

Racism is the normal condition of things. Racism is pervasive. It is in the systems, structures, rules, languages, expectations, and guidelines that make up our classes, school, and society. For example, linguistic and writing research has shown clearly for many decades that there is no inherent “standard” of English.

Language is constantly changing. These two facts make it very difficult to justify placing people in hierarchies or restricting opportunities and privileges because of the way people communicate in particular versions of English.

quote:

Furthermore, by acknowledging and critiquing the systemic racism that forms parts of UWT and the languages and literacies expected in it, students and writing center consultants can cultivate a more socially just future for everyone.

Just avoiding racism is not enough because it means we are doing nothing to stop racism at large, and it amounts to allowing racism to continue.

This is one person at the University. Also you stated that the University will not penalize bad grammar. That is not true. He's just trying to start some movement there . With that being said he's obviously some freaking idiot
