Darth's list is very good but I'd also add about 500 condoms (at least). Bikers attract women like you wouldn't believe. They will literally be running you off the road trying to rip your leather pants off

saw him a couple of days later in Deadhorse. This poor bastard was covered in shite from head to toe. They use some kind of binding agent to keep the dust down, but when it gets wet, it gets on everything and dries like gunite. He was missing one of his saddlebags. It stuck out further than he was used to and he had hit a bollard at a gas station. He truly looked miserable. I gave him a beer and tried to cheer him up. How many people ever see Deadhorse Alaska? Not many. How many ride a motorcycle from Ohio? None! Just you, dude! You're one of a kind, you've got lifetime bragging rights, etc.

When I was ring through New Mexico I ran into an older guy who had done a lot of long distance MC riding in his day. He had riden a KLR to Deadhorse back years before. He told me there were times of quiet and loneliness on the road, but the loneliest he had ever felt was when he had a flat, all alone, on the road to dead horse, and he pinched/cut his last spare tube.

I had researched and planned the route and potential camping spots ahead, and was able to stick to most of it. It really was a help having preloaded routes in my gps so I didn't have to keep staring at s map while riding.

What kind of areas did you camp in? I've done state and national parks but I found the campgrounds were usually congested and in close proximity to each other. The exception was a secluded cabin that was part of a hostel on the Lower Fork River in Polebridge, MT.

Some were busy and some weren't. If they were packed, I just rode to a different one. Most were just a place to sleep, not necessarily camp with a fire and all that.

I camped at KOA in Amarillo. Archesview outside Arches NP.
Las Vegas at uncles house.
National forest campground on hwy1 by big sur.
Richardson grove SP by Garbarville Cali.
Goose lake campground Oregon.
Snake river oxbow Oregon.
Yellowstone NP.
State park in Wyoming.
Park in Capulin NM.

Some were great, some were terrible, but the camping wasn't much more than a cheap place to sleep. If you can't find anyplace when time to crash I've had recommendations to find a nice quiet cemetery and pop a tent on the edge of it. They are quiet and someone usually keeps the grass mowed.

Also, I'd recommend some kind of sleeping pad. I had an auto inflate air mattress that had enough foam in it that it was fairly warm (eventually)

Videos

I even made a few videos of the trip. They aren't much production wise, but they were fun to make and share.

If you do go, I found the planning and getting ready for it a hell of a lot of fun as well. Just make the most of it and get the biggest bang you can from it. You never know if you get to do this again.

Remember to do the low wave thing to every motorcycle you pass.

I'm in the initial planning phase of kicking around the idea of possibly, one day, riding the Transamerica Trail. LINK / Coast to coast-ish on the dirt.

I know a guy who did it and me and a buddy are looking to do it before we get too old. We might take a couple of years to complete though.

It's a great trail but Sam has watered down some of the trails around CO. The expert only sections in Utah are for real. I ran the TAT on my XR650L. Consider your bikes accordingly. Consider the CDR also (S-N trail from NM to Banff, AB) or one of the many BDR's

I'm knocking out the new NVBDR and IDBDR this summer.

Well of course, he has got to keep people on their toes that are stealing his maps.

Road to Prudhoe is still like that. Passing trucks is crazy because of the dust being kicked up makes it hard to see.

Many aerostitch suits have been ruined making the trip up to there.

My dad drives one of his antique motorcycles across the country every couple of years in the Motorcycle Cannonball. LINK They generally avoid interstates. Maybe digging around online for some of the old routes they have used will give you some ideas?

Mt Zion in Utah. I've never been myself but I've been told it is fantastic.

Yeah I did. There is a mountain there. It's called Mt. Zion. Same thing.
