Where would you rank New Orleans for dining in the U.S.?

I am guessing second or third behind NY and San Fran.
I don't know because I've never been to either one of these cities.
Just wondering.

The highest it could be rated is #4 IMO
NYC, SF and Chicago are the top 3
After that, the debate begins

They are considered the home of a unique American cuisine that is readily available across the city. Neither NYC of SF can claim this.
I would certainly rate them in the top five.
NYC
Chicago
Houston
SF
Insert your favorite here.
Hard for me to place these in a ranked order.

I hate this argument. Houston is not in the top 5. Maybe top 10. Houstonians have napoleonic complex.

Houston isn't in the top 5. Lol.
You'd have to have LA or Portland first.

I'd have vegas above Houston or New Orleans

Vegas is a solid choice. They have a shite ton of restaurants that are top notch. I'd say New Orleans has more unique top restaurants.

I'm thinking of it this way...
If I had only one city to dine in for the rest of my life and money is no object, it would be hard to rule out Las Vegas as number one for me. I'd have everything at my fingertips.
To answer the OP's question, New Orleans has some of the best local resources, but lacks in ethnic diversity that the bigger cities have going for them, but it would still be in the top 5 for me.

A lot of rankings are interchangeable, but I'd feel perfectly comfortable with putting New Orleans in the Top 5. That says a lot considering how small the city is in comparison to the others I'd put in there.

There are good higher end restaurants in New Orleans and it can be difficult to distinguish the best of different cities. The strength of New Orleans restaurants aren't the high end places specifically but the how good the city is top to bottom. Stuff like Katie's, High Hat, Toups Meatery, Matt and Naddies, Boucherie, etc that would be highly celebrated restaurants in other cities but in New Orleans are "mere" well respected neighborhood places that don't attract a lot of tourists.

I think the gulf resources is a big deal but I agree when you look at bigger cities and the diversity it's pretty big difference, I'd not say Vegas though as they have to import all their resources. I would give a nod to SF, just to hang out at The French Laundry.
The obvouis NY, Chicago, they have their own ethnic neighborhoods. N.O. can't compete with that.
That said we ate at Irene's last night before they closed and man it was so good. So good, even with a hour and a half wait.

I call bullshite on this "New Orleans doesnt have ethnic food" argument. Are we missing say a volume of Korean restaurants, sure but we have a great one in Korea House. And the vast number of Vietnamese spots is something to behold. So really what etnic food are we missing?
Dollar for dollar, I think New Orleans is the best restaurant city in America and has a better indigenous food culture than any other place in the argumentative analysis.

Unless I am mistaken, they still have a Pancho's there, so definitely in top 5. NO's Pancho's went out of business years back.
I honestly forgot LA, which is a good food city although They have no PAncho's that I know about.
I have spent time in Portland and am not impressed.

New Orleans doesn't have the sheer amount of Indian, Korean, Burmese, Ethiopian, etc. that other cities have.
I love New Orleans as much as anyone, but the ethnic dining scenes in New York or SF blow it out of the water.

Vegas is ok. I simply forgot about it.
Nice free drinks there. Don't think anyone ever offered me a free drink in NO. Or Houston for that matter.

Competing with New York for number one, but probably number 2.
Posted on 2/5/17 at 8:44 pm to SaintBrees
So a city that has more ethnic restaurants is a better eating or restaurant city solely based on the volume of its restaurants that are ethnic?
That logic just doesnt hold much water when you consider other great worldwide food destinations and their cuisines (Paris, Tokyo, Barcelona, etc...)

Classic argument...is lyon and bologna the best in their respective countries or is paris and Rome? The passion for the dining scene is much greater per capita in the smaller cities. Rome and Paris have their own cuisine too though. Just like Bologna and Lyon are the beating heart of food of their countries, so is new orleans.
With that stated, no list of a top 5 in America is correct when considering everything without NYC, San Francisco and New Orleans.
Chicago is likely right there...then LA, Houston, DC, Charleston, etc.
Now, when you get to global great dining scenes NYC is all that belongs in the upper echelon...maybe san francisco if we include napa/sonoma and carmel.

I literally responded to the question you asked about what ethnic foods New Orleans is missing.. Which is plenty.
Why ask a question if you're going to change the topic when you get a response?
