School Choice Will Lead to Higher Teacher Salaries--why do they oppose it?

More school choice will lead to more schools and smaller classrooms and like in any industry create more competition and higher wages for talented labor---in this case teachers.
Why do the teacher's unions oppose more opportunities for their members????
Could it be they are all about the power of the union and not the interest of their dues paying members? We know their interest is not education quality.

You are becoming OWSA-Rubio level with this man.

Because the incompetent will be weeded out.
And they have a lot of that.

They will lose dues money. It is all about the Benjamins.

School Choice will not lead to higher salaries in my state. In Arkansas you already have a choice to send your child to whichever school you choose.

i try to explain this to my mom (a really great math teacher who struggled to raise me and my siblings b/c of the teacher salary)
she's got that union DNA so hard that she won't see it
she even readily admits a ton of teachers don't do shite and are just in it for the easy paycheck, long holidays, and 2 months off in summer

Everyone will leave bad schools in bad neighborhood abandoned, and nicer schools in nicer parts of town will grow nicer.
It will allow people to self-segregate even more.
Not that I disagree with school choice, but those are the reasons.

Now IB supports government intervention in private businesses?
I give up
I give up

Ill actually answer this.
YES, 100% which is why I ended my LAE/NEA membership.
As you have in several threads already done, you are discussing theory. This is Louisiana. It will not work out well for anybody. Remember when they told teachers if you are found to be highly proficient for 5 years, you will get a bonus? I'm still waiting on my check.
I have NO faith that SoC will work well in our state unless we completely overhaul how we educate students. The JUMPSTART programs are a push in the right direction, but it doesn't go far enough yet.

I think all education funding should be voucher and let the local governments take their schools private if they wish.
It is crazy to think that the government school system we have today should continue as it is. We have TONS of red tape we expect teachers to work under and that is just crazy.
If we go all vouchers small, specialized schools will start up catering to every need.
Just think about this---we spend about $500,000 per classroom of 30 students in Louisiana. The teacher cost benefits and all no more than $75000. Where is the rest going????
Give that money in vouchers to kids and watch many of those same teachers start up schools and deploy that money in much more effective, efficient ways. They could pay themselves $150,000 a year and buy the kids new books every year and still would not have spent half the money.
Why anyone wants to continue like that is beyond me.

I only see you post about the minor issue of school choice.

Public schools pay more than private/charter schools in louisiana and it's really not even close. The only school I can think of that compares to a public school teacher salary/benefits package is Episcopal.
Education should not be a 'for profit' department

My guess is bc it will also lead to teacher accountability and real performance metrics.

The shallowest poster on TD appears again.
I support a complete voucher system for education so that privately run businesses in the school business will start up and grow to replace our government schools and your nitwit analysis of that is that I support intervention in private business?
Do you consider buying missiles from General Dynamics intervention in private business? Giving food stamps to people to shop with intervention? Giving social security to people that can be spend anywhere--is that intervention?

One reason is they lose control.
But, it's also no guarantee it increases teacher salaries.

Why not??
All enterprises are basically for profit. Which are not? Even the government schools are "for profit". The profiteers are the bureaucrats who lobby government for more money. Epsicopal is "for profit"--it has to have revenue to operate.
"For Profit" vs "non profit" is basically just a tax issue.

They might have to work more than 7 months a year...
Posted on 2/3/17 at 9:54 am to I B Freeman
For every talented teacher, there is one just there collecting a paycheck. Looking back I had some great teachers...and some awful ones
