My current troybuilt mustang (pure shite) went kaput and I need to buy a new one. I don't want to spend more than $3,100.

What are the best brands?

I bought a 46'' Husqavarna from Lowes and its a work horse however I think I paid more than 3100 though.

I have a buddy that is Ann Ex-mark dealer, has a loyal following. I'd probably only consider John Deere, but not one from Lowes or whoever else besides a JD dealership

You can get a Kubota Kommander series that comes from a real live dealership with real live service for right above your budget, but not by much. Check them out.

I've been involved with the lawn care industry for 30 years and have operated exmark, gravely, cub cadet, John Deere, kubota and a few others. I personally like exmark and gravely the most. Exmark also has a 0% payment plan for up to 6 years. I think the most important thing is to get the welded deck, even if it's just for residential.

Dad has a lawn service and has exclusively had Exmarks for the the last 15 years, pricey yes but those things can take a beating and still hold up.

John Deere is expensive but it's worth it.

These threads are always people just spouting off mowers they have.

You can google and see that Hustler/Big Dog mowers are consistently rated the best zero turns for the money and they have a line in your price range.

Of course brands like Ex Mark, Scagg, etc are great but they aren't going to really fit your budget and their benefits are more for professionals.

Don't buy a Husqvarna ZTR like previously recommended in this thread. Gravely mowers have a lot of issues, and Cub Cadet is meh. John Deere is nice but pricey.

Find a way to spend a little and stay away from the big box stores unless your yard is small and mower stays indoors.

Go to a local Gravely or Exmark type dealer and get an entry level commercial or prosumer model.

Reliability, longevity and ride quality will be better than the cheap big box units. At least go visit a dealer and look at the quality of the decks before you waste money with a cheap unit.

I've had a John Deere zero turn for about 10 years.

Engine blew right after I bought it, the dealer replaced it under warranty and no trouble since. They even picked it up at the house and dropped it off when it was done.

edit: bought at Deere dealer and not Lowes/Home Depot.
