Fourth grade PC lives

Just got off the phone with my Brother. He has a daughter in the 4th grade. Yesterday at lunch, while seated at a table with several classmates, the kids were playing 'I Spy'. One little girl, who is AA, was 'it'. She said, "I spy something black". My niece, said "Is it you?".
The AA student told the teacher who sent an email home last night. Niece had to apologize, write a note of apology and I guess get a note from home saying the email was received and the parents talked to her.
And this is where we find ourselves.

You're brother is an a-hole for raising such an observant brat.

she had to apologize for being observant?

I can understand making it clear to her that some things could be considered insensitive, but a letter of apology? I'd be at that school and it would either stop or we'd change schools.

Racism = When a white person speaks to a black person about anything, ever.
Although there are some cases when white people are allowed to speak to black people but must do so on both knees, proclaiming white privilege, and begging for forgiveness.

What is insensitive about her answer when the girl is obviously black?

If she whispered it then I don't see the problem.

if you were to get offended in this situation then you suck.

My youngest daughter, age 8, recently said something along the lines of "I got dis" instead of "I have this."
I asked what did you say? She said I'm just talking like those brown people. So apparently brown is the new black at her school.

With race be constantly thrown in our faces and and the current social climate, can we really be surprised the kids first guess was her black friend?
I'd be more shocked if she didn't say that tbh.

The unfortunate lesson a fourth grader might take away from the incident is don't associate with black people....

Two things to consider...at least.
It would have been clever for the black girl to use herself, I guess.
If the roles had been reversed...course of action? (Well none b/c my niece wouldn't have gone to the teacher since no offense was intended.) But even if she had, these things would not be required of Shon'tavi''a....or whatever her name is.

Agreed. But I do get just helping her understand what could potentially trigger people in today's society. Also understand the school's desire to not be sued, but I wouldn't stand for my kid being made into the villain like this.

why would your brother name his daughter Shontavia?

You are forgetting about implied racism.
I teach my kids to evaluate every person based on who they are and not some arbitrary label. The problem using that logic is that the perpetual victim and those who teach kids to act this way annoy the crap out of me, and I don't like them. They assume it is because of the color of their skin, when that has nothing to do with it.

Solid Lesson.... teaching kids not to play with the other race EVER. What a great way to promote inclusion.
