A stretch? They both end in "gue" preceded by a vowel. Why can't they both sound the same?

Pirogue
Rodrigue

It's the one word where someone claims that saying it more like it's spelled is the Cajun way . I've heard pee-rowg, with a very slight g as much as pee row. But from various down the bayou areas, I've heard pee-row. It's not a "only people from up the bayou" thing. I've heard pee-rog with a hard g as well. But it honestly was less common. I admit, I grew up what I referred to as up the bayou, but it's still down the bayou compared to most.

That's also the Canadian pronunciation.

Aparently all the people who pronounce their name O-geron can't be correct according to honky lips

As an outsider who has spent a decent amount of time between Cameron and fourchon, and talks to people from the region frequently, I find it funny how you coonasses can't even agree on these pronunciations.

They can, it's just not a one size fits all. Changing a vowel can change pronunciation

According to your rule, it would be per-rowg

I've been thinking of anything else that ends like that and those are the only two I can come up with. So fixated on those two it's jamming my mind.

Duhe
Daigle (pronounced Dayg)
Domange (doe-main)

names usually dont apply to pronunciation rules no matter what the language. mostly because people can call themselves whatever they want (and change the spelling as the see fit)

that being said:
-Duhe is pronounced "doo-way" so the H is being pronounced
-Daigle is really supposed to be pronounced "day-gul" but people can get lazy with names with no consequence.
-Domangue (you misspelled it) is pronounced DOE-MANG not doe-main. the G has TWO vowels behind it and thus cannot be silent. i know plenty of domangues in chauvin and not a single one of them says doe-main

I'm good with pee-rogue, pee-rog doesn't work for me

Kind of like asking a redneck to pronounce corn

Corn

Now say acorn

Akern

I've known the pronunciations to change within the same family due to members "falling out" with one another.

Also interesting (from the Landmass, not Acadiana): There used to be several pronunciations of Favre. Once Brett became famous, everyone else gave up correcting outsiders and just went with his way of saying it.

I'd agree, but one is now a doctor, and the other is a judge in Lafourche. Kirby Smith honors floor.

I grew up in Montegut, and that's what it's called Probably can't even say Isle de Jean Charles or Grand Bois either

born, raised and still living in Montegut.
There is definitely a g sound at the end of that word.

How harsh the g depends on how far up or down the bayou you live.

my wife is from Houm and doesn't even attempt either of the places.
Just says "the island" and Bourg-Larone hwy

Duhe is pronounced "doo-way" so the H is being pronounced

The H is absolutely silent there

I know plenty of Domangues from Chauvin and I am related to a few of them, and they pronounce it dough-main

I can read and write, so you know I didn't go to Ellender.
