Not really. Companies don't make strategic decisions like that on a whim.
Carrier was in the middle of building their Mexican plant. You think they seriously were planning to abandon their plans midway?
Oh, yes, 700 jobs saved in which the governor of the state had to personally step in and make it happen.
If you think that sort of thing is going to occur in a labor force turnover as rapid as ours among tens of millions of workers, you're delusional.
Not going to be any tariffs on agricultural, oh? If we start slapping them on auto manufacturing, I promise you that you'll start seeing them on agricultural exports. Do you know who the equivalent of a Trump voter is in Mexico? The sector that's been killed by NAFTA and is now in populist revolt?
Farmers.

Indiana had already offered that to them prior to them beginning to build the plant.

There aren't going to be ANY significant tariffs. That's part of the reason Mexico is so eager to renegotiate NAFTA. They want to avoid tariffs and believe Trump to be serious when he says he'll put them in place.

Trump can't stamp a 35 percent tariff and BMW will not be intimidated by Trump and NAFTA fully allows by law the ability of BMW to ship Mexican-made cars to the US.
What will be sadly funny is when BMW shuts down the South Carolina plant because they can do the same thing in Mexico with cheaper labor and no amount of tax breaks or union busting or right to work stuff will make South Carolina automobile manufacturing labor competitive with Mexican labor.

Interesting to see union loving democrat Ralph opposing Trump on this issue.

We have subsidised ag. That is a tariff like policy. Or a policy that has some resultant consequences that are similar to what some other tariffs, unilateral and otherwise have.
We prop up prices and demand, others prop up labor, and artificially lower prices.
Posted on 1/16/17 at 3:23 pm to Ralph_Wiggum
That's completely wrong, too. Mexican auto labor is getting more and more expensive.

Yeah, we are finally seeing that Ralph is not as principled as he wanted us to believe.

You're doing pretty well, but you might want to rethink this one. We could crush anything Mexico would attempt to do against us in ag. Fairly easily.

I have no sympathy for autoworkers in SC who are not members of the UAW. They chose to not be in a union and they will get screwed over

Mexico turns around and slaps a 35% tariff on American imports
You do get that companies are moving to Mexico due to low wages, right? How ae Mexicans going to earn that extra 35%? By raising wages perhaps? Then how does that benefit BMW?
quote:
So, you're a smart guy. Why do this?
Youre just too naïve. Its the same thing that happened when we raised the minimum wage. Did that work?
Nope, jobs moved overseas, next we starting wholesale importing illegals, and now we've created H1B visas. All to get around paying higher wages
Population of Mexico is 127M. The US is 319M. BMW just built a plant in S. America in 2014. Who do you think they plan on selling those 120,000 vehicles a year to? Aint lower wage earning, border hoping Mexicans, for sure

what better way to keep Mexicans in Mexico than them having jobs??
Or just use the revenue from the 35% tariff to build the wall.

Furthermore, this is not even an American company.
So? The US is the largest consumer market. We have leverage to try to convince them to build their products that they wish to sell to us in our country

He lost his shirt in real estate. He was horrible at it despite riding a wave of increasing values that earned a lot of people a lot of money.

I suspect you are not correct. He, and a lot of other people lost their shirt in the Atlantic City casino business, and he has lost money on some real estate deals, but by and large, he has grown his business.
This is not a good argument for you. Stick to something that actually merits some criticisms, such as his continued poor choice of words, or better yet, your disagreement of an actual policy like healthcare, or taxes.
I'll check in from time to time. I'm eagerly awaiting Notre Dame guy to come back and explain how Mexico is going to put a hurt on the US ag business. That one should be good reading.

Here's what I would say to Trump:
BMW already builds over 300,000 cars per year in South Carolina, which is roughly equivalent to the total BMW sales in the US. Some of those US-produced cars are exported, and some Chinese and German-made BMWs are imported, but BMW is still making/selling cars at a 1:1 ratio in the US...
