Lol I need to do a tank cleaning and do maintenance on protein skimmer and powerheads today.
Red Sea tanks look sweet. Whats corals do you like?
I probably ask my poor fish store 2 hours of questions over 6 months. I always try and throw them business, but so not competitive on supplies. Have great coral though.
Yeah I have calculated how much all the rock, sand, salt, equipment like powerheads, and RO/DI system would cost to get it all set up and we are looking at about 5 grand. Going to try and negotiate a signing bonus once I officially get my new job. I've already been told I have the job, its just a matter of when the job is ready(its a new position for a team that hasn't been launched yet).
When I had my 16 gallon Nuvo I really only kept soft corals like torches, frogspawns and zoanthids. My stock was 2 clowns, a yellow watchman goby paired with a coral banded pistol shrimp, and an orchid dottyback. Then a cleanup crew with hermit crabs, trochus and nassarius snails, a cleaner shrimp and an emerald crab. That's one reason I want to go big on my next tank, so I can progress and keep some more advanced corals like LPS and SPS. That's part of what I enjoyed, monitoring the water quality and dosing and all of that.

$1 a gallon in New Jersey
I actually love the easy coral taste wise so I guess I am lucky. Have 2 hammers, 2 types of green star polyps, zoanthids, Duncan, torch, and 1 scan.

If this is a serious question of course not. I do it all the time, needing to kill a few minutes ahead of an appointment or just because I'm interested in what the store carries. As far as the store is concerned I'd welcome browsing, knowing something may catch your eye. Maybe not a customer now, but perhaps down the road. Or, you may refer someone to me.

The place I went to today was $0.75 a gallon. If I got that 65 gallon tank that means about 50 bucks to fill it up all the way and then $5 for every 10% water change. If I bought all 65 gallons to start and then did a 10% water change every week it would take a year to break even on an RO/DI system from Bulk Reef Supply, but that doesn't count the cost of the water I use at home for the RO/DI system in terms of my water bill, as well as replacing the filters and membranes in the RO/DI unit. Nor does it factor in gas used to get to the LFS.
All really depends on if I can find an LFS in Houston that is close and charges a good price for their water. Like you it would be nice to have an excuse to go in all the time.
Do you have to keep your green star polyps under control or do they behave on your own? Have heard stories of them taking over tanks and being more of a nuisance. Which is a shame because they might be my favorite soft coral.

Looking is cheaper than owning, not to mention all the maintenance hassle.

As long as you're not shoplifting, I don't see the problem.

My GSP has grown well but not crazy. Plus I have Galexea by it so it will get stung back soon enough. I got tiny frags of it. Supposedly it is super easy to drag so not too worries if I need to trim. It does flow nicely in powerheads. It's funny to me how the coral I like best are the cheapest.

I like softies the best too. I really liked it when my frogspawns and torches were open under my actinic lights. SPS corals don't have the same effect.
I think people like SPS not because of how they look, but they like the challenge.

You can add about a dollar a gallon for salt. Probably in for 2-3 gallons top off a week too
Posted on 1/14/17 at 2:52 pm to goldennugget
Yeah to me SPS is all about challenge. If I wanted challenge I would go seahorses or anemones lol

Could you buy mixed saltwater at your LFS?

People go to Walmart just to exercise in a well lit, controlled climate. I see people in workout clothes power walking laps around the store all the time.
In some communities they are known as accomplices.
