In retrospect how much of a frickup was Lex Luthor?

I mean really, if you were to plan it out, Lex was just awfully planned. All Snyder thought out was him as a crazy Mark Zuckerberg, when he should have been an even more intertwined Loki to the DC Universe.
With Trump's Election, it's pretty obvious by the end of their Phase One, Luthor should have been elected President and gotten away with his schemes. Luthor doesn't have to be the main antagonist in these movies, but have an imposing presence that overshadows the universe.
I just don't understand how anyone can defend Snyder/Eisenburg's interpretation of the character. Why wasn't he a pragmatic idealist who really didn't perceive that all of his steps in improving humanity in the end only benefited himself? He's instead totally nuts who doesn't really seem to have a grasp on reality. He's simply awful in this universe and should have always been an imposing badass who really ruled the world with Superman being the only person who stood up to his power.

I'm with you at least. It still bugs me but that's just because I'm so tired of Superman movies not being done well.
His portrayal was abysmal. I keep hoping there's a long term play there character-wise and he becomes much more menacing and quiet(?) so you see an evolution where he turns just as twisted but in a much more controlled manner I guess.
Most likely they just got it all wrong trying to do the young techie as Joker or something and painted themselves into a corner. What a waste.

I don't remember if it was you or someone else on this board that said Lex should have been more like Elon Musk than Zuckerberg. A serious, driven guy, not a loony eccentric.
They probably thought they were appealing to younger viewers with that casting, but the irony is younger viewers already have a defined image of Lex from the DC animated productions and from Smallville.

It literally might be the biggest frick-up we've ever seen (except for the prequels). It's just a complete out of LF moment. The thing is some of the writing for his character wasn't even that bad. I found myself thinking that every time I saw MZ on screen as Luthor, how much better those lines would be with someone who was physically imposing and menacing.

The story was pretty dumb, but I didn't mind Eisenberg as Luthor. I kind of liked him. I know I'm in the minority thou.

Yeah, making Luthor into a young tech geek who has Joker-esque traits was a huge mistake. I always liked Luthor being older and more mature. It's a great contrast to Superman who is usually much younger.
They've made a ton of mistakes with the new Superman movies. They overreacted to Superman Returns and made a mistake of completely abandoning what worked for the original Reeve movies.
There was some rumor during the filming of BvS that there was going to be a scene stolen from the comics that took place in a diner where Luthor basically mindfvcks some waitress. Forgot the details but it sounded like a great way to show just how manipulative and intelligent he was. In the end, the diner location on the set turned in out to be where Martha Kent worked.

I feel like the movie did too much and lex was centerpiece to that. Lex Luthor is a very complex villain and they really didn't get into his complexity.
In addition, they set him up as the archnemesis of superman but then put him in prison which was stupid. what makes lex so great as a villain is not his insanity, but instead his business empire. If they had done him right, lex could have been in almost every movie as Lex is intertwined in superman's life. And also, him and bruce wayne do business together.

Eisenberg does not "get" Luthor. He has a rollicking good time as a paintless Joker (or is that pointless?) - but the simmering hatred, or if you prefer, icy menace of the comic book Luthor just isn't there. I would equate the real Luthor with a much younger George Soros type - a venomous spider at the heart of his web, pulling strings, arranging things to his total advantage, waiting for the exact right moment to strike! Eisenberg is just not that Luthor.

Comic movie reflection real world values is the reason why DC failed so hard. There's hinting at it with allegory like MCU but then there's the going to dark like DCU.
