So I'm doing laundry and watching some old LSU highlights on youtube and I'm not sure if that was a catch by Doucet.

LINK

Watch the replay. I'm not sure if he ever had complete control of the ball

It wasn't a catch. Didn't secure it until he'd already landed out of bounds. Oh well

No way that's a catch with replays these days

I think that catch was one they used as an example to change the rule on maintaining possession through the ground....

That's what I was thinking

A booth review would have shut that down and we would have lost

"Better late than" Early Doucet.

He had a drop early on but made up for it in the end.

The definition of a catch has changed dramatically since those days. You only had to secure it breifly before hitting the ground, as you were considered down on contact with the ground. There was no "maintaining possession through the catch", or after hitting the ground. Kind of like the ground can't cause a fumble rule. That would be incomplete by today's rules no doubt.

Now whether or not he secured possession before he hit the ground is a different story.

Meh. It was before review and before all the new catch rule changes. It was definitely borderline, but fricking awesome.

Luckily, the official making the call is quick to make a call and looks away and signals TD before Doucet loses control.

Can you imagine the gut punch it would've been to the team and the entire state to go from the high of the win to the low of the loss if that was reversed? Damn

I think based on the rule at the time it would have been ruled a catch. Rules now it is definitely incomplete.

Zero chance that's a catch today, but I'll take it all day long.

The rules have changed dramatically since 2005. Today that's not a catch.

For the others asking the play was revised in this game to make sure he had a foot in. It stood.

That would have been called a catch then.
