I was an Adjunct prof at the Citadel and CoC at the same time.
If a child of mine wanted to go to the Citadel I would highly encourage said child to find another school as there are many better schools in this country. Needless to say my opinion (from the late 80's) about many students at the Citadel is not the best. Seemed like many spoiled lazy legacies at that time.

Citadel grad here, graduate school at UT-Austin, I value my Citadel experience vastly greater than UT.
Currently working for a firm in Atlanta for a CITADEL grad. Had a job the day I left and could go virtually anywhere in the USA and have a hookup based on the alumni connection.
Yeah, the acceptance rate is high. Because we don't have a ton of applicants who aren't scared off from the rigors of the 4th class system.
In South Carolina, the Citadel ring means as much as any other degree, and much more in many cases.

That's true of anyone with high profile military parent(s).
One of my classmates at A&M is one of the sons (his younger brother went to VMI) of a former Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. His father (then a Major General) was at our commissioning but wasn't even the highest ranking member in the room.
The individual in question will soon take Battalion Command and while being his father's son had some influence, there's absolutely no way he would have survived long in the 160th SOAR without being a damn good officer.
Other posters take note of how neither I or Wolfhound45 have propped up any school or downgraded any school in this thread as opposed to others who have used this thread as an opportunity to trash certain institutions.

While at the citadel, I participated in some leadership training with cadets from each school, I was impressed by the TAMU corps as well.

I've only met four individuals from The Citadel. One is our current Division Commander and another is our Division G3.

Good stuff, not sure how anyone from LA has an opinion one way or another, but I can assure you the perception on this board is the first I've ever heard like it.

Me too. I went to CofC and am blown away by this board's view of The Citadel. If anything I should hate it after going to CofC.
FWI several of my friends went to The Citadel and 2 cousins went to VMI. While I think the rigors of VMI are a bit more strenuous, they both produced fine officers.
Served with both VMI and Citadel grads in the Navy. I certainly cared for their style and leadership qualities more than the USNA grads.

VMI and the Citadel are private colleges that just happen to wear uniforms. Might as well join ROTC at A&M if that's what you want. USMA you are a paid member of the Army. During every summer you go to places and learn about various aspects of the Army i.e. go to Fort Knox for a few weeks and get to learn armor. Not to mention West Point is also essentially an Ivy League school when it comes to education. All 3 of the service academies (I don't know much about Coast Guard academy) are so far above the private military schools is not even close.

Summer between freshman and sophomore year, all cadets can compete for airborne and air assault slots.
Summer betwern sophomore and junior all non-senior military college/non-academy cadets go to a "Basic Camp" at Knox.
Summer between junior and senior all cadets compete for Cadet Development Leadership Training slots while all ROTC cadets attend an "Advanced Camp" at Knox (formerly Lewis)

Yeah, I did not get that point either. All commissioning sources (to a greater or lesser extent) have similar opportunities. They are not unique to USMA.

Sure you aren't a member of the military when you enroll, but to compare it with ROTC at any other school is laughable. Every cadet is in ROTC and is a member of the corps. If you don't think experience as a cadet officer is valuable in the military or in the civilian world, I would have to strongly disagree.

Bro in law is at the Citadel. He likes it for the most part. Majoring in Criminal Justice. Just got back from studying abroad in Cypress. (Island off the coast of Greece). Said freshman year sucks, but I can imagine that will be the same at any military college. I think the biggest difference is at the Citadel you don't have to do ROTC and be commissioned after graduation. Bro in law didn't go that route because he was still unsure of what he wanted to do...but decided he will be joining the Marines after graduation, so he has to attend OCS.

For whatever it's worth, The Citadel has a $255M endowment as compared to LSU at $330M. Pretty decent for a school with an enrollment of 2000.
