Echo Dot the most useless thing ever invented? ETA CAD giving it another go

Got this for Christmas and thought i'd plug it in and see what's up.
It doesn't do shite. I ask it to bark like a dog and it won't. I ask it to play music and it says you have no music. i ask it basic search questions and it says 'i don't understand the question'.
but if i ask it to order toliet paper it fricking goes on for 20 minutes about the options i have to get it to my house.
i don't need a fricking commercial sitting on my desk. yes, cad doesn't have prime so i'm sure that's the problem but frick. this thing does absolutely nothing. i can't even ask it the lyrics to songs.
got it from my MiL and i'm trying to find out where she got it from so i can return it.
wtf is anyone using these things for? ordering stuff? i don't order shite from amazon so the fact its trying to sell me something everytime i use it just pisses me off.
'alexa go to hell'
'i'm sorry you feel that way'
UPDATE: CAD paired it with wink and i've decided i can live with the limited amount of devices it can control in lieu of not having to always keep my mobile device handy and running a rube goldberg set of tasker apps.
i'm going to give one star back
and see if it will become something i use all the time.

Me: Alexa, Did Jeff Bezos frick CAD's sister?
Alexa: I wasn't able to underestand the question I heard.
Me: Alexa, I don't understand it, either.

I don't know about any of this stuff but two attorneys I know are always talking about how awesome Alexa is and I can hear them telling the thing to do something a thousand times before it works.

Should have waited for the Apple version to be released. It's gonna be a game changer.

Interesting as you seem much more tech savvy than I. I have the DOT set up in the bedroom with a bluetooth speaker connected. Plays all of my music in my amazon prime account and activates the lights on my WEMO switches at my command and controls the NEST thermostat when request is made. Not sure of how you set it up and if you have it linked to an Alexa account, but it's all good for me.

yeah i'm still waiting for the 'thing' that it can do that i'm like HOLY shite.
about the only thing i've gotten it to do is simple math problems.

Ask her for the value of pi.

well it does create ears for all of your home automation items. seems like that would be something you would be interested in.

no prime, no music. but when i ask alexa to play a song she happily says 'i cant play that but i can sell it to you'.

i dont have any wemo switches and wink handles all my lights and i have voice-control (using tasker) on my phone that handles 100% of my smart doodads without having to worry which can be used with dot or home or which can't.
if it can't handle 100% of my smart things, its absolutely of no use to me.

my thermostats are dialed in and so i almost never need to voice control them so haven't tried hooking up my honeywell and because tasker on my android phone supports voice commands already, i don't need yet another device listening for commands.
like i said, it just doesn't fit with my HA lifestyle and i tried to find a use for it.

WRONG. it creates ears for a ******TINY****** subset of smart things and creates more confusion than anything.
i already have full voice control of EVERYTHING including robots, shortcuts and direct access to devices without the crippling limitations of dot.

Download the Alexa app to sign into your music services like Iheart, Tunein, etc. Then search for Alexa skills to enable.

cad has cracked versions of spotify and pandora (spare me the moral judgements) so to sign into those services on alexa would just cripple my unlimited skips and fill the air with commercials.
also my main music library is on google music, and well, you know...
NO THANK YOU

I understand completely. The S/O uses it to listen to music or the news while getting ready for work or an outing. It's nice that she can ask DOT to play her music instead of asking me to come set it up for her.

i kind of doubt that. i dont own one but i cant imagine its a tiny amount. google home can control every single smart appliance i have. i'd be surprised if alex could only control a very small amount of smart things.

in that case its a no brainer to go with google home. My library is GPM as well and it made the decision extremely easy.

No, it is pretty limited. There is a lot of potential but Amazon really is leaving most of the heavy lifting up to 3rd party skill developers. I also don't understand this:

Note: If you have an Echo, it cannot be used to control your Fire TV. To learn more about what Alexa can do on Echo, go to Supported Alexa Features.
Even though they say that, there are plenty of videos like this one of people controlling their fire tv with Echo. This video shows someone controlling lights and using Kodi with Echo.
