Hmmm...
I'd guess LeBron, but I don't know how much is fan-driven vs incessant media coverage for trivial things that shouldn't be considered news.

Trending up, Tyreek "The Cheetah" Hill. If the Chiefs go to the SB and win there's a good chance Hill will be a big factor and a household name in 2017.
Don't worry about Hill's smack down and attempted strangulation of his pregnant girlfriend, that was an isolated incident and he's been rehabilitated with $2.5 million dollar contract.
Had to throw the bad in with the good so y'all would not waste the keystrokes telling us all how Hill's a TPOS/thug.

Aaron Rodgers has to be in the mix. Tiger is still up there. Spieth is trending up. But the answer is still LeBron

Michael Jordan, right now, is still more popular than any current athlete.

Does it have to be a current athlete? If not, Peyton Manning is way up there, if not #1. He's all over TV and has been in the news a ton for his rehab, Super Bowl wins/losses, pending retirement, sexual assault, etc. I'd actually be surprised if Manning wasn't the athlete recognized the most by an average American picking out of a lineup.

If you Google something along the lines of "most popular" or "most recognizable" athlete in the world, not just America, lebron is #2 to Ronaldo on probably just about every one of them.

When you got kids who neither born nor old enough to pay attention to basketball lining up to buy his shoes for $200, that says a lot.

2. Lebron
That's the list.

He said American athlete so no on Ronaldo.
MJ and LeBron could go either way. The fact that MJ is still even in the conversation is amazing and shows just how incredibly popular he was at the height of his career.

Poll shows that LeBron currently tops the list but is also the least liked. Like I said, it could go either way and if you have LeBron on top it's not by a large margin.
quote:
LeBron James sits atop the list of America’s favorite sports stars. This will hopefully provide some degree of comfort as, while he clearly has plenty of supporters, he also leads a less desirable category: when asked to name their least favorite sports star, James tops that list as well.
quote:
According to Nielsen’s N-Score (a measure of entertainers’ marketability), each of the top five athletes named above – with the exception of Aaron Rodgers – is known by at least 75% of Americans. Among the group, Michael Jordan has the highest awareness at 88%, followed by LeBron James at 76%, while 75% are aware of both Stephen Curry and Tom Brady. Although Aaron Rodgers is known by a lesser 46% of Americans, he’s still 70% more recognizable than the average football player.

So more people are aware of MJ, but more people recognize Lebron.
I guess that makes sense.
