Not trying to say MSY defines Louisiana. I know that area of the state more than I know Texas (only been here 2 1/2 years), so I know it's just part of it. But when comparing shitty areas, Houston has much nicer shitty areas than the NOLA and BR metro areas. I worked in Greenpoint (aka Gunspoint) and basically didn't believe people in the office that it was that bad until there was a shooting outside our office. I know it sounds dumb, but I feel uncomfortable in some areas on NOLA and BR because they feel sketchy. Greenpoint is one of the bad places in Houston and it really doesn't look all that scary for the most part. It's not the nicest part of town, but it doesn't feel like the worst ghetto around (even though it is).

They have multiple energy companies competing for your business.

if you want to experience shitty Texas, go to some of the sketchy border towns
I basically lived in one for 6 months
they had drive by shootings literally everyday

Which one? I lived in Mission, TX for a year. It was interesting.

They had a guy get arrested for fricking the gas tank hole of his vehicle during the fair in the parking lot of Greenspoint a few years back. That made me LOL.

Falfurrius
wasn't exactly on the border, but it was so shady
this was back in 2012
they had to have an emergency town meeting to bring in more cops from neighboring cities to help
I went for a run one day and had a cop stop me and tell me that I really shouldn't be running on the road

I think the Texas mythos comes from it offering what every conservative wants: a strong/diversified economy, an efficient state government, a healthy middle-class and potential mobility to go higher, and a conservative stance on most of the cultural issues that have divided the country of late.
Basically, it's the conservative's promised land (from an idealistic standpoint).
On the flipside it is certainly lacking in the scenic and cultural categories. The state hardly has any history. The food/music scene is almost entirely imported. No one goes to Houston, San Antonio or the like to wander around and take in the local charm. At least, no one I know does.
But I can certainly see why people like it there. And I realize that the same local pride that can annoy us outsiders at times is also what has pushed the residents to make the "great state" what it is. I'm just not a fan of the suburbia lifestyle.

Well written but highly uninformed
I would recommend you take some trips to the state parks, to the major cities, to the capital, and out to west texas and places like Marfa
Might change your perspective a little

Texas has some good to great areas, but about 85% of it is terrible.
It's economy and schools are up there nationally, which is a big plus.
It's not a place I'd ever have a desire to live, but I can understand why others would want to live there.

I'll get downvoted, but I'm not a fan of the BBQ there. It is ok, and Ive had it from some of the most well known places...
Blacks
Franklin
Cooper's
Kreuz
... I guess that is a personal taste thing though. I'm more of a Carolina style BBQ fan.
