for years this board has been melting about firing Les, but now we can't be upset about failures anymore?
we need to "get the frick over it"?
how convenient

Ha ha. The same people that wanted miles fired because they didn't like the direction that the program was going in are ok with hiring the least qualified coach in big 6 history.

So his plan is to have great assistants who will do the coaching for him? Got it.
Yeah pretty much like every other coach. Something we all wanted Miles to do. Let the coaches coach.

Can you give the guy a full season before you act like a fricking pussy?

We dont know if they did. Our AD thought the only qualified people were Jimbo, herman, and then a 55 year old dline coach. Alleva must go.
LSU had 3 months to conduct a coaching search. I find it odd that after those three months they basically had just 2 high profile coaches and then O on the list.

Bear Bryant went 1-9 his first year at aTm.
For his only losing season ever.
I like O and I'm OK with how things went down, but comparing him or anyone, besides maybe Saban) to Bear Bryant is ridiculous.

O will win with Miles' players :-) in fact he will win with practically Miles' entire staff....just saying

He had little to work with at Ole Miss.
Who's responsible for that? He was head coach for 3 years. Good coaches can turn things in the right direction in 3 years. O's conference record his third year was 0-8.
His Ole Miss experience was a debacle. People can discount it if they want, but it was just a debacle, and there's no excuse that will fly.

The more germane question is whether Les could have orchestrated wins vs the Hogs and aTm. Bert owned Miles except for one implausible, last minute, miracle drive.
Bert had top 15 rush defenses when he faced miles.
Bert has a rush defense ranked in the 100's this year. The type of defense that had miles 7-0 with the heisman front runner last year.
Les owned A&M.

He had little to work with at Ole Miss. I think they should have kept him another year because he was building up the talent nicely before he left.
His tenure there wasn't bad. It was a train wreck

O is an improvement over Les. Recruiting won't suffer. O will actually install a modern offense and give the OC the freedom to run it. If O can learn to manage the game, clock and how to keep focus, manage distractions he will have to chance to be exceptional.
When has O ever installed a modern offense? If he's somehow successful initially, do you know what happens to successful programs?? their coaches get hired for promotions. When has O ever successfully identified and selected coaching talent to fill these vacancies?? One of the pros of O is his salary is lower and leaves more room for assistants. If O is (again, somehow) successful do you think he'll be fine with being paid like shite compared to the other top tier coaches in CFB?? Once he demands more salary we'll have to identify actual coaching talent rather than throw loads of money at the hottest names out there..
Les had a lot of positives and eventually became too stubborn to overcome his few deficiencies. O has maybe a couple positives, noticeable negatives, and at best a shite load of question marks. To compare him to Les favorably at anything other than being an interim coach is insane.
This hire, in the best words, is ridiculously short sighted. I'm going to put on some rubber gloves, grab the next shite I take and throw it at the wall to see if it sticks. I'll be a rich mans Joe Alleva at that point, At least I'll realize what I'm doing is utterly ridiculous.

With top tier talent....i think O will be just fine.
It was said by everyone at the beginning of the season (and it remains true). This teams ceiling was based upon QB play.
We would have been undefeated with a QB slightly better than Etling.
We also would have beaten Wisconsin and Auburn with O at the helm. (And UF 9.9 out of 10 tries).
While I don't agree with the hire, he does guarantee that the cupboard will stay stocked. Hiring a good OC/QB coach (which wouldn't have happened with Miles here) probably fixes our QB issues in the near future.
Would I rather have Herman/Aranda? umm. yeah. But O has displayed a willingness to adapt and some nice little tweaks throughout the season. I also get the feeling he's very good at motivating the players.
These were obviously 3 areas that Miles has been criticized in.
And I don't think anyone ever "accused" Les of being an X's and O's master.
There's no reason to think the sky is falling.

The fact that O didn't deliver at all while at Ole Miss scares me
What is your age and experience? That was a long time ago under completely different circumstances and experience levels. All that matters for Coach O is the USC and LSU experience an Interim. If you want to compare him to Les, this is your starting point, and then you should give consideration for the lack of a full season of his own planning and development for his personal implementation.

this is so incredibly dumb
he time at OM is the most significant entry on his resume, and you people just dismiss it out of convenience

Either way you slice it, the coaches immediately before and after O both did better than O at Ole Miss.

Ok, lets forget that, he is 11-4. Not good enough to win anything...and he did that with stocked cupboards of other coaches.
quote:Oh, so we think he will make them better with his own systems, with no proof that shows otherwise. Fine, but one way is just hoping it works out, the other is based on some pretty damning evidence.
then you should give consideration for the lack of a full season of his own planning and development for his personal implementation.

And why, based on anything Ed O has ever done as a coach, should the consideration be given with the idea that he could potentially improve situations?? He's literally done nothing to back that idea.
