BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, livid that Tom Herman backtracked on an oral agreement to be the next LSU coach, pulled his offer to the Houston coach late Friday night, a high-ranking source close to the search confirmed.

The source said a perturbed Alleva told Herman’s agent, Trace Armstrong, via phone Friday night, “Don’t worry. I have a guy who wants the job.” Ed Orgeron will be introduced as LSU’s new coach at a news conference Saturday.

As first reported by HornsDigest.com, Herman and LSU had an agreement in place for him to become LSU’s coach. The source would not divulge exact terms but did concede the annual compensation was “north of five (million per year).” Papers were to be signed Saturday morning in Houston.

That changed when Armstrong called Alleva on Friday night to inform him that Herman wanted to hear out Texas; the Longhorns fell 31-9 to TCU on Friday afternoon to finish 5-7. It was then that Alleva, angered that Herman and Armstrong had reneged, pulled the offer and decided to hire Orgeron, the source said.

I don't have any sources, but I've heard from others that do that this is correct.

I honestly don't quite buy it...if there was truly an agreement in place, you go ahead and announce it that night, with a presser the following day.

That supposed line from Joe is more bullshite put out there for the "he wants to be here crowd!"

It's scary that irrational and emotional decision making like that can be allowed to take place in an organization that generates hundreds of millions of dollars.

Didn't Alleva hire the Alabama softball coach who after the press conference change his mind, I'd say Joe has a reputation for being a bitch that can be played by coaches, agents, players and the media a jellyfish has more spine than Joe.

If that's true, why don't you just wait till Saturday evening and see what they counter offer?

It's not like we had a timetable with Orgeron. You lose nothing.

Ego is why. Alleva didn't want to feel bullied so he pulled the offer.

That's shitty negotiating IMO. Put your pride away, you do what's best for the University.

This is essentially what Miles did with the Jeff Long situation and people were livid. Now that Herman did it, people downvote you?

The bottom line is that HERMAN wanted the Texas job.
Alleva was rebuffed. Aleeva did not rebuff Herman in anything more than the literal sense. Herman would have just strung him along and signed with The Horns, where his heart is. Aleeva did not "frick up" with Herman. He just read the tea leaves, and moved on.

Whether he should have had a fourth candidate after Herman, Jimbo and Coach O is a matter of opinion and a separate issue. I think he correctly felt that O was as good as any fourth option out there, especially considering that the staff would be retained and a great Offensive Coordinator will be brought in.

If Alleva really said that, then he was bluffing and Armstrong/Herman called his bluff.

I'd love to sit down at a poker table with Alleva. I'd clean his Sam Waterston-looking arse out.

That's exactly what I was told, except that they were meeting Friday night to sign off on it and he was gonna be introduced at the presser Saturday.

So is everyone still believing what they read? There was no shortage of people claiming to know thing leading up to the bombshell that was dropped, and now no shortage of people claiming to now know what "really" went down. I think it's all bullshite. I don't kow what to believe. I'm actually about 90% sure that Coach O is the next HC, but wouldn't be too shocked to suddenly hear that he really isn't the new coach and somethnic crazy like Bill Parcells is hired.

Having done M and A for years it is clear JA does not know how to negotiate.

Negotiations are based on a win win for both parties.

IF a deal was truly in place the proper response in the next step of negotiation was for JA to say

" I understand your position and trust you understand ours. We have an agreement in place but out of respect for Mr. Herman I will raise our offer by 500K and this is our final offer. Mr. Herman has one hour to accept or reject. IF there is no response in one hour all deals are void.

We look forward to you telephone call within the hour."

To respond the way it is reported JA did is simply at best unprofessional and at worst immature.

Liar, liar pants on fire. No deal, no sources, no insiders. Alleva said he only offered one person the job and that was Coach O. He did not engage in a serious coaching search. He and LSU look as incompetent as can be. We can't get who we want in 2 months yet Texas does it all in half a day. Our administration is pathetic.
