And, I would agree. I'm not saying who I would sell the farm for between Jimbo or Herman. What I am saying is, if you have identified your guy, you go and get him no matter the cost. That's what they did.

But Saban wasn't their guy. He was their plan C.

It's Jimbo's job if he wants it. Numerous metrics to iron out. I was told just a second ago that LSU money thinks that Oregon and Texas might get in a bidding war over Herman. They're not too keen on jumping into that bed. It's Jimbo or bust. And bust could be Larry Fedora. I'm hearing that Fedora is gaining some traction. PJ Fleck isn't going to happen. Dan Mullen isn't going to happen.

ONOZ! We actually have to pay for one of the brightest upcoming coaches!? That so typical Alleva bullshite. Basically he's hoping Jimbo comes around or it's down to Larry Fedora. Larry fricking Fedora.

LSU does realize that coaches like Herman will always be in demand from other quality schools, right?

I think they wanted him, but he turned them down. They went for Rich Rod ( ) and got turned down; so they upped their offer. Saban turned them down again. They went for Greg Schiano ( ) but got turned down, so they upped their offer to Saban AGAIN.

IIRC, Saban was the highest paid coach in college football when he was brought to Alabama back in '07.

Oregon and Texas have DEEP pocket books.
they also have very real issues that keep them from being equal to LSU.

Oregon has no recruiting base, every player they have needs to be imported, and summer camps at home are basically pointless because most kids cant get there.

its possible to overcome that of course, but it takes more work and more travel, and that takes time away from everything else. there are only so many hours in a day.

At LSU, you can walk across campus to Lab and sign 5 stars.

Texas does have a base, obviously, but their backroom politics and ego have held the program back for decades. thats not gonna stop now. its similar to notre dame in that regard. icyf, hermans ex-boss turned them down for florida, and, despite what message boards say about herman/texas, notre dame really was urbans dream job.

...by firing Miles when he did, he put LSU in a position to attempt to accomplish something THIS season. Alleva tried to fire his arse last year, but it fell apart. When he was proven to be correct all along he got rid of that bastard the first chance he got. When Miles was fired: 1- the sec West was still in our grasp 2- a playoff berth was still alive 3- a NY6 bowl was still on the table. There was zero chance to accomplish any of the above with Miles. Every other possible coaching candidate was coaching a team when Miles was fired. Its not until this time that getting a new coach can start to really grow legs. I am certain Alleva didn't just sit on his hands until this point, but there isn't a whole lot he could have

what you say is 100% correct. many, if not most, on here have no clue what a coaching search is and the realities involved. since LSU is looking for a top tier coach with experience it means the candidates are successful where they are, highly compensated and may be happy as a lark. it is tough, real tough. timing and luck are probably the biggest factors in hitting a home run hire. EVERY program faces the risk of settling and that happens more often than not. it took bama several tries before getting lucky with Saban. Michigan, Miami, Texas, USC, Ohio State and Notre Dame are just some programs that had to settle over the last few years. you could easily add Georgia, Florida and Auburn to that list.

That's fine. But, they didn't say "Oh, well he will cost too much, let's go plan D or E." Or, "He's going to want an insane amount of administrative control and operational discretion, so, let's go further down the list until we are comfortable with the cost scenario."

Mal still had to go to Miami and do some convincing and make some concessions, even with Saban ready to hit the eject button.

You should have read further into the post. I said IF money is the deciding factor for Herman we are in 3rd. We don't compete with those two in a battle of check books.

Have they talked to Saban and Meyer??? Sure we would take them....but there is no chance of them leaving.

ok now this part is dead on. bama instantly made saban the highest paid coach in CFB with an 8 year deal worth $32M.

$4M a year sounds funny now, but the actual number is irrelevant, the point is they paid more than anyone else.

if theres a guy we want, we need to pay him.

Stoops' name keeps coming up.

I'm not sure why, but it does seem interesting to me. Test balloon, perhaps?

The only decision for Herman should be where he can have the most immediate and the most long term success.

you dumb. you don't even know the man and you are trying to tell us how he's supposed to think?

quote:

LSU is obviously the immediate choice

you dumb. the man has a number of options that may appeal to him more, esp since he won't have to coach against Saban and the SEC West every year.

If we want to win - the only excuse for not gettin the best is he's too dumb to accept

you dumb. you have no clue how a coaching search goes.
