Hermans main selling point is that he's great at offense, yet Houston is 5th in scoring offense and 7th in total offense in the AAC.

Philip Montgomery at Tulsa and Willie Taggart at South Florida are both better.

Montgomery is 44, Herman is 41, Taggart is 40.

Montgomery was the HC at Denton HS outside Dallas, then the co-OC/QB/RB coach for Art Briles at Houston and Baylor from 2003 to 2011, then OC at Baylor from 2012-2014.

this is his second year at Tulsa, who was 2-10 the year before he got there, 3-9 the year before that. in year one Montgomery went 6-7. he's 7-3 this year.

Taggart rebuilt Western Kentucky then took over South Florida, who went 5-7 (1-6 in the AAC) and 3-9 (1-6) the two years before he got there in 2013. he's gone 2-10 (2-6), 4-8 (3-5), 8-5 (6-2), and now 8-2 (5-1).

Houston was 8-5 for the two seasons before Herman got there.

im not saying we should hire Montgomery or Taggart, but if we are gonna take an offensive coach from the AAC, why arent we at least taking the best one.

He's been really impressive.

I heard some stat on the local radio in Tulsa that he's already doubled the amount of TDs the previous coach had in his whole 3 year tenure at TU

Been at TU for almost 2 seasons now and has amassed around 105 offensive scores**

Ken is the best coach in the AAC but I already know LSU fans are obsessed with not being a triple option team to consider him.

LSU is not hiring Taggert, but he is going to end up at a P5 school soon.

why don't you like Herman? give me a legitimate reason besides cherry picking houston's offensive stats from 1 year.

If you're going to focus on his offense at houston, why did ignore his #2 ranked offense last season? Houston has also improved by atleast 3 loses since Herman got there.

I'm sure you're familiar with the job he did at Rice, ISU, and Ohio State. His time at houston has shown that he can manage a program and perform as a HC.

There's a reason he's #1 on Texas's list.

You can make a great argument for all three of them, however, one thing that Tom Herman has under his belt that none of the other guys do is a win against Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.

Sure he was the OC, but he was playing with his third string quarterback, and he adjusted the offense to work around each different quarterback.

We also know that he can recruit and coach up good duel threat quarterbacks which give Alabama fits.

In any case, I'm sure all three are fantastic coaches, and LSU has a lot of potential to make a fantastic hire here this year. But no matter what, I believe that we should prioritize a coach that can beat Nick Saban above all else, because whether we like it or not, nick is here to stay for a while, and we will never be able to win anything without beating Alabama!

I was saying last year that I didn't like what was happening because we were forcing ourselves into a box where we could only hire a certain "name" like Jimbo. I said specifically that I thought someone like Matt Rhule could be an excellent P5 coach one day. He's another excellent coach in the AAC.

You can call me a homer, and that's fine, but Morris is could very well be the best of the bunch. He was given a flippin' high school team and in two years has caught up to both Houston and Tulsa; that should NOT have happened. I am interested in seeing how SMU does against USF. Morris's offense and recruits took Clemson - Clemson - to the National Championship game and he has the contacts, personality and drive to out recruit anyone. Even shown he knows how to pick DC's. If we hadn't lost our starting QB, RB, and multiple o-line in the first two weeks of the season SMU could have been looking at a conference championship.
If SMU somehow wins the next two and goes 7-5 we are going to lose him and I would HATE to see that.

Please can we put this to bed?

Based on that logic:

Crowton beat Saban. Studrawa beat Saban. The CO-OCs from Oklahoma (norvell/Huepel) beat Saban.

Because he beat a Saban coached team with weeks to prepare means little. Any decent OC with their own playbook would have beaten Saban this year with the way our D play and the field position we earned.

The point he's making is those other two guys took over programs in worse situations and is progressing from year to year....Herman is regressing from last year.

Does it means he's a bad coach? Of course not. Depending on the fit he could be a star somewhere.

P.s. Damn you have to love Tulsa's yards per play. Refs stole the Houston game from them

The beatdown that Memphis put on them in their own stadium should cause you to temper this talk a little. I like their coach, as well and think he's an up and comer, but better coaches at Tulsa, Navy, and USF all got the better of him and the Tigers. No so much for SMU.

people here all focus on the QB and totally ignore that Zeke Elliot was the RB. he's the one who carried Ohio State to a title, just like Fournete and Guice carry us to every win.

when Ohio State played bama, Jones had 246 yards passing. Elliot had 230 rushing.

in the title game vs Oregon, Jones had 242 yards passing, Elliot had 246 yards rushing.

Houston isn't a good team

He's had injuries at qb position too and found ways to win

He's a tremendous offensive mind and would do great with elite talent

Niumatalolo gets more out of his team than any other coach in that conference by far, but he isn't going to a big time program for obvious reasons. I think someone like Kansas could hire him and be moderately successful because his offense makes up for talent deficiencies when it is run well. That offense will always have a ceiling, though.

Morris is more than likely holding out for the A&M gig seeing as he is an alumnus.

people keep saying this, but its sorta bullshite

HIs team may not be as good, but that doesn't mean he isn't as good a coach.

frick Saban hasn't had an undefeated season since 2009. He hasn't regressed as a coach.
