If you are passionate about geology, then by all means, go at it. You should try and speak with a couple of geologists in your area and get a feel for everyday work life and what they do.
From my understanding (through friends in the field), the job market is pretty bad. I believe a lot of petroleum engineers are trying to get on to more of that type of work as they are all being laid off left and right. That market is cyclical, but whew...this is pretty low. I'm not sure when things are going to be on the upswing for that field.
Also, I would advise you to be as open and flexible in relocation as possible. Lots of people won't or can't take jobs due to relocating. The more able and willing you are, obviously the better.

BOEM? Yes, that is the best gig. As long as you never throw out a racial slur, you're good for life.

Nobody is hiring PE's for a geologist position when they can just hire one of the geologists who are being equally laid off.

This could be said for every single industry.

You will probably have the same opportunities you will have if you get a general studies degree.

The word is advice.

Hook up with a mining company. Fly into the mountains, work in cool locations.

Foul. You only get one per post. Leave the rest of us some.

To work for a major company you will need a masters or a phd.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I really appreciate it. boudini my email is medlogic200@yahoo. com and any advice is welcomed. I have a B.S. in from a medical college in the area with a minor in chemistry. I figured it would take about 2 years to finish my undergrad and continue to the master's program.

I work at a NG company. Market is in a dip but I doubt that will be for very long. Most of the geologists I know are jerks but maybe that's just my opinion. I do know they are paid well for their time, and in our case hasn't produced many results.

If you don't want O/G, mining is a great option. You actually are outside a lot instead of in front of giant computer monitors. :haha:

The positives of going into geology with an interest in the O&G field: Trump is about to unleash the drilling dragon.
The negatives: it's a saturated field. TA&M actually sent out a letter to petroleum engineering prospects a few years back telling them that it was an over-saturated field. There are a lot of O&G people with experience that are unemployed right now. On top of that, even if Trump does help the field by laying off the regulations, it may last only 4 years. Maybe 8. It's just too volatile a field. You could graduate in 4 years starting off in the $65-90k range, or you could graduate and have no jobs on the horizon.
If it's your passion and you can do it without going into much debt, have at it. If you're doing it because you expect to make bank when you graduate, you're taking a big risk.

Is he going to raise oil prices for us?
Posted on 11/12/16 at 3:14 am to TheIndulger
No, but I think that he'll make it easier/cheaper to drill in the United States. And while I hate the idea, I think he'll try to put a tariff on foreign oil.

Geology can be a very good field, but most of top paying jobs are with advanced degrees. I was considering going back to school for geology.
However with the current job market (as others have said via oil-gas mining) it would probably be easier to find work via chemical engineering or some other broad discipline not tied to one area of work.
That being said, we are assuming an industrial career and not a research one.

Thanks, but that was a play off a previous thread.

If you don't get your masters, you will have a hard time finding a good job.
