Regardless of your political leanings, this is a must-watch. John's most recent episode deals with something that has probably affected everyone at some point in their lives, whether directly or indirectly, and that something is multi-level marketing companies. You may have been involved in one, or possibly been harrassed by their cult-like followers. Man, the people who shill for these companies make my skin crawl....

It's a 30-minute video, but I urge you to watch it.

I don't understand how people can fall for these things... but then I don't understand how someone can fall for a Nigerian money-wiring scam either.

It's pretty absurd what these companies get away with. I was really glad when I saw that was his topic.

Oliver's condescending arrogance almost makes me want to start selling Amway.

I worked with a guy whose dad was big into amway. The rebuttal to saying it doesn't work is "the ceo is worth millions." I went with them to pick up their order of "the products they were buying anyway". just a bunch of sad people getting generic branded shite.

I got an amway gift card from a family member when I got married. I assume that counts as a sale and you can imagine the initial sales pitch.

There's a new one now in Houston that's somehow based on the deregulated energy market there. They're just another one of the 100s of "electric companies" you can choose from there, except their marketing is done via the pyramid scheme model. Real bizarre. A guy I went to high school with, who became a cop and has no degree, quit the force and joined up with this energy company pyramid scheme. Perfect target of these type of things. They go to Joel Osteen Megachurch, so they're natural suckers. I feel bad for them.

There was a pyramid scheme in Lafayette in the 80's that took off like a rocket. Prior to the inevitable collapse, some people made a shitload of money.

Someone tried to get me into one of these during my undergrad. I was getting shitty hours at my sales job for not enough pay and I was young and dumb, so it tempted me. Then the meeting with the guy was held at Starbucks and he drove up in a 10 year old Honda CRX. I quickly realized the guy was full of shite and was not making money like he claimed to be. If he had driven a fancy car and had an office I might have fallen for it.

5 downvotes....uh oh, are there some MLM shills here who got their feelings hurt?

Yeah, I've noticed that many MLM distributors will shame and/or strong-arm their recruits from the get go...I don't know if it's either a cheap motivational tactic, or just desperation on the distributors' part, knowing they're already in too deep themselves.

When I was at LSU a friend convinced me to go to a Primerica presentation. Bill Whittle, who many know in BR is loaded as shite, came and presented to a few of us. He just eloquently laid out how it was a pyramid scheme

At least I got free TJ Rib's. I pleaded with my friend to walk away as it was clearly a pyramid scheme, and they had him trained with some bs explanation as to why it wasn't. Needless to say I ran into him months later, and he had quit

I've heard some of the companies mentioned in this thread, but not all. The company that recruited my friend in college was called Melaluca. I think they're still around...
