I don't think of Mary Kay as being a MLM, not like that other crap. I always thought it was more like selling Tupperware, shite housewives did to make a little extra dough. And I've seen enough pink Mary Kay Cadillacs in my life to know that some people are making bank selling the shite.

There's a new one now in Houston that's somehow based on the deregulated energy market there. They're just another one of the 100s of "electric companies" you can choose from there, except their marketing is done via the pyramid scheme model. Real bizarre. A guy I went to high school with, who became a cop and has no degree, quit the force and joined up with this energy company pyramid scheme. Perfect target of these type of things. They go to Joel Osteen Megachurch, so they're natural suckers. I feel bad for them.

There was a pyramid scheme in Lafayette in the 80's that took off like a rocket. Prior to the inevitable collapse, some people made a shitload of money.

My thought as well. I just don't have a lot of sympathy for people that buy into these things. They're dumbasses.

I understand people falling for it when MLM was relatively new, but now it's pretty widely known that they are scams. Crazy that people fall for it still.

Mary Kay is undoubtedly an MLM scam. Just google the company structure. Folks making money is irrelevant. That's part of the pitch. Harp on the people at the top of the pyramid who made bank and convince everyone they can be just like them.

A successful MLM has to make money early on in order to have success stories to sell.

Both require people that are searching so desperately for meaning, purpose, or success in life to the extent they are willing to overlook logical fallacies to be apart of something that claims it can fill that void.

My wife actually made some decent side money selling Mary Kay, but I think that might be the exception when it comes to main stream acceptance. She also never tried to build a "team" or any shite like that, just sold it to relatives and friends who already used it anyway.

there are some MLM schemes that can work. the issue is the products

hell, real estate agencies like Keller Williams use a MLM structure, but houses have real value

Mary Kay sells products that are quality

the ones that are total shite are the ones offering completely shitty products. typically it's really poor quality (like Amyway) or bullshite "health" products (like Advocare, Limu, etc). these are doomed to fail b/c you can never actually sell the products and it implodes within itself.

Is this like selling knives or It Works! ? According to facebook anyone with a little effort can work from home and retire in 5 years by selling body wraps.

Me too. Before it was easy to do independent research on these things, I can understand. But now? No way. You are a fool if you do any of these.

completely agree

I know some folks that are caught up in one too. These are college educated, working young adults.

And these chicks keep trying to get people to come to their "essential oils party".

did you at least get some free product, drinks and dinner? I went to one of these parties one time and ended up getting a solid buzz.

I'd probably attend another just for the free drinks. I live texted a group of friends during it. Good times.

They both attract "joiners".

They both tend to be primarily populated be credulous people, otherwise they'd see through the scheme in either case.

They both preach "get rich quick!" Watch Osteen on TV. All he talks about is how "God wants you to be rich".
