As an LSU fan, I love Leonard Fournette and the dude is an absolute stud. With that being said, why do you feel we need him? A RB which is one of the easier positions to find for an offense that almost always is in the top 5 of the league?

Also, looking back at the RB position under Payton & Loomis, I think it's fair to say that while our 1st round picks (Bush and Ingram) have been serviceable, we've undoubtedly had more success with late round - undrafted guys. Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Joique Bell, Khiry Robinson, Travarris Cadet, Tim Hightower now, also just as a bonus, we almost landed Arian Foster a few years ago but he chose Houston because of depth purposes.

This team needs defensive depth in the worst way and while we've shown flashes of greatness, it's still a major area of concern for us. So why use a 1st round pick on a RB that will get nowhere near the volume of work he deserves down here?

All either udfa or free agent pickups.

Payton has only drafted 5 RBS

Bush, ingram, murphy, lasco

Edit: forgot bust Antonio Pittman

why use a first round pick on defense when we've gotten plenty of defensive gems as UDFA's or free agents or trades?

Just my opinion, but Fournette has always looked better when the QB is under center handing him the ball as opposed to both him and the QB being in the backfield. Not sure if Buga is exactly a great fit for the offense y'all run.

Here is a devil's advocate rationale:

As Brees ages, one way you might choose to protect him and extend his career is by remaking your offense into a more balanced one.

As he gets older, you may find that you get more out of him by asking him to do less.

I mean Fournette would be awesome, but I don't want to invest a first round pick in a RB. fricking Tim Hightower went for 26/102 against the SEAHAWKS.

Also, because LSU.

For the record, I would actually be okay with us taking Jamal Adams because Byrd is probably gone next year and we can run the 3 S look again with Bell and Vaccaro like we did in 2013.

sometimes the hungry guys just simply play better.

But this is where people need to look outside of "lets draft LF" and look at some starters right nwo in the league.

Hell, Elliott being the lone guy in the top 5. and he was a 4th overall pick behind the best OL in the NFL.

David Johnson: 3rd rounder
DeMarco Murray: 3rd rounder
Lamar Miller: 4th rounder
LeSean McCoy: 2nd rounder
Matt Forte: 2nd rounder
Jay Ajayi: 5th rounder
Jeremy Hill: 2nd rounder
Gio Bernard: 2nd rounder
Devonta Freeman: 4th rounder
Isaiah Crowell: UDFA
Spencer Ware: 6th rounder
Matt Jones: 3rd rounder
Le'Veon Bell: 2nd rounder
Tevin Coleman: 3rd rounder

Some people would rather the saints go 0-16 with all LSU players than 16-0 with all Alabama players.

Everyone on here saying NOT to draft Fournette is trying to look "NFL Football Smart" and put down on the LSU fans who want him.

It is idiotic.

If you get a chance at Fournette, you take him. He is going to crush it in the NFL and why would you not want a back who can get 2000 yards from scrimmage as Brees ages?

I know we have other needs. People are saying "Guard." Well, no kidding. But, when everyone here was screaming to draft La'el Collins last year, the same geniuses said that you don't draft a "Guard" in the first round. You can get him high.

I'd love to see the Saints get an All-Pro anything in the first round. We've drafted CBs, DTs, OTs, and all kinds of players in the first round. What did they amount to? Some were great. Most were busts.

We don't have a great RB. If he is there, you take him. Period.

I think the explanation for drafting LF7 would be to transition the team to something like the Broncos did with Elway. Becoming more of defensive/running team. We have seen the Saints pick guys like Peat, Anthony, Rankins, Kikaha, Vonn Bell, David Onyemata to build up strong line play to move to a more physical style of play. Add that LF7 is an elite talent that won't come around for a very long time and you build the team around him.

I'm not saying we should take him, but that would be my thoughts on why you might take him. Right now, we pass because we have to. We also like to, but we have to. Ingram isn't carrying this team to wins.

The Saints traded back into the 1st round to draft Ingram, who is no where near the caliber of player Fournette is projected to be.

If Fournette is there when the Saints pick, it wouldn't surprise me if the Saints take him to help take the pressure off Drew.

If RBs are so easy to find, why haven't we had a dependable one since Pierre Thomas? Look at what Elliot is doing in Dallas. What Gurley is doing with the Rams. #1 stud RBs are still at a premium in the league. And we have:
Ingram - who's never done anything consistent for us.
Hightower - who has no knees
Lasco - solid
Cadet - pass catcher only
Murphy - returner who can't even hang onto his spot
Its not like we have this stable of backs who are irreplaceable.

Plus, Drew Brees isn't getting any younger. His production could fall of a cliff any year now. As he gets older we'll need to move to a more balanced attack ala the Broncos with both Elway and Manning.

I'm not going to complain if we get a stud pass rusher etc, but to act like we don't need or couldn't use Fournette to shore up our run game is absurd.

Well a running game will help out the defense and keep the other team guessing even more with this offense. i.e Dallas,Minnesota etc

I'd rather not draft Trent Richardson 2.0.

LF7 is compared to Adrian Peterson, Bo Jackson, and the rest of the badass RBs that you heard of and you don't want him lmao.
