Why aren't women required to sign up for selective service?

Equal rights and all.

Because when it was instituted, the military was male-only, and in the interim no draft has been used and we have been integrated in terms of gender.
It's shitty, but you asked.
ETA: Women's lives, biologically speaking, are far more valuable than men's, additionally.

My girlfriend can't even make a decision on what movie to watch. Would hate to see that analysis paralysis under fire.

Because women are simultaneously strong and independent people who can do anything men can do, and weak flowers that must be protected. By the way, it's both feminists on the left and white knight conservatives on the right that feel this way.

Because most grown arse men that are in the military can barely handle seeing another man being killed, much less a woman.

Right off the bat I would guess they aren't required because they are women.

No. No, that doesn't make sense at all.

I don't think anyone, male or female, should be required to sign up for selective service.

I think he was making a point about mixed-gender unit morale and how having women in there can make men do shite that jeopardizes the mission in order to save a woman.
I think.

Someone's gotta stay back to take care of the chiren while the men do man stuff like shoot people and blow stuff up.

There was a recent push by some in congress to make women sign up for SS since the Obama and the Dems said women were equally as capable as men in combat. Haven't heard what happened, though.

Congress simply has not lifted the restrictions. I expect sometime in the decade it will be lifted.
The only time I see us needing to draft is if war breaks out with Russia as it would be a war on two fronts.
Drafting women even if not for direct combat (I know they are allowed to be placed in combat roles) would free up able bodied men for combat roles.
A policy of requiring women for selective service but then restricting their service to non-combat would be the most palatable option for congress IMO
A woman who may not be physically strong enough for the rigors of front line combat can still serve in essential areas such as supply, intelligence, and administration

Well, they want equal rights, until it's something negative.
