It not dying so much as it's the 30 years of emphysema .
Not written in a warning on the pack is the vascular damage done by the nicotine will eventually render one prematurely impotent.

My grandmother smoked for roughly 70 years and died at 85 last year after a brief illness.

You are more likely to get cancer from the shite you eat than tobacco. All the pesticides, steroids, etc pumped into the foods we eat will kill you much faster

Ignore all responses in this thread
Anecdotes =\= data
This point needs to be made on the internet and this board in particular about 100 times per day

Every older smoker in my family had chronic health issues later in life. For more convincing evidence go take a survey of the patients in a cardiologist, or pulmonary docs waiting room.

My aunts father in law was like the old dude from grumpy old men. He ate bacon twice a day and drank beer from noon til bedtime. Died in early 90s.

Got any studies?

I love anecdotes.
"My (grandmother, parents, friend of a friend) smoked their whole life and lived to the age of (80/90/104)."
Sure, you could win the genetic lottery (if your idea of a lottery was exposing your friends and family to your smoke/breath/nasty habit your whole life). You could go your whole life driving without a seat belt without injury too, if you got lucky.
Don't believe facts or scientific studies--those aren't for you.
And feel free to bitch about the high cost of health insurance while you're at it.

Tobacco is terrible for you. That being said I've met a lot more 80+ year old tobacco users than I've met 80+ fatties.

Exactly. I'm 35 years old and have never needed my seatbelt. I've never been in a wreck other than a minor fender bender at slow speed. But I still put it on every single time.
And sort of on topic, I think cigarette smoking does far worse to your overall health than just your heart and lungs. I can always tell a smoker by their skin and hair. I don't think chew or dip, or cigars for that matter, affect your overall health as much. We all know people who have done that for long periods with no ill effects.

My great grandma smoked for 85 years

Knew a guy who was in his 90's who always had a pack of cigs in his pocket. Ask him how long he had been smoking he said since age 12, and I've outlived every damn Dr that told me to quit. The guy still worked part time for a paint and body shop.

the OP was this
quote:
Do you know anyone who has used tobacco products for decades and are still going fine? 80 and 90 year olds specifically
he's asking for anecdotes?

Smoking certainly ages you quickly, especially if you are a woman. Show me a woman still attractive in her late 40s/early 50s....no way she smokes on a regular basis.

My great uncle just turned 96 last week and chews Redman. It's actually kind of gross to see him take his teeth out and put in a big wad of chew.

Grandpa chewed Levi Garrett his whole life. Died at 93.

Cancer is only a small percentage of the ill effects of smoking/tobacco use.
Nicotine destroys your arteries. I average about one amputation a week of a toe or foot from someone who has gangrene secondary to smoking.
