Is The Angola Prison Rodeo Rigged To An Extent?

Went for the first time this year. Had a good time and the weather was great. There was 1 inmate who seemed to win almost every competition. I was impressed at first, but then after paying closer attention and watching the other inmates, it almost seemed rigged. Like many of them didn't even try to win an event. Just curious if anyone else noticed this? Is the winner predetermined or is the winner just one bad motherfricker the rest are afraid of?
Also, while I had a good time, frick they traffic. We walked around the crafts for about an hour after the rodeo(as I was told to do to stay out of the traffic) and still sat on that highway for 2 hours before even getting to the main hwy.

Strong possibility. Also, this guy could have been in rodeo pre-prison where most of the other guys were not.

Some inmates grow up around animals some don't. They eliminated events like "partner pick up" because they would stick a convict that has never rode a horse in his life on the back of one and expected him to ride around the arena.
It's entertaining to watch them thrown off in a matter of seconds but several of them clearly want nothing to do with it.

Win the event on a single day or get raped everyday till next year... difficult choice indeed.

Probably. I don't go expecting to take it too seriously. Also, I probably wouldn't go if it weren't for the arts & crafts

It could be rigged but when i went it just seemed that 99% of the prisoners had no business being around a bull.
So it is more likely there was an inmate that has been in rodeos his whole life vs former 5th ward residents.
Like others have said, the arts and crafts are what to go back for. It is pretty cool talking them about their work.

Wonder if this is where they got the concept for Kings of Leon - Beautiful War music video.

Not possible. Everyone in rodeo is a fine, upstanding citizen with no interest in meth or other criminal activity.

It could be but I doubt it. It is definitely a competition and there is a bit of prestige for being the winner. Read "God of the Rodeo" by Daniel Burgner. It's a great book that came out in the 90's. It was what made me start going to the rodeo in the first place.
You are so right about the traffic. They built a new stadium about ten years ago that tripled the capacity but they still have that one little road to get everyone in and out.

Some work with the animals every day, and some just show up for the party

I really wish they would allow "Wild Cow Milking" to go on a bit longer.

It's a prison. It wasn't built with ease of leaving in mind.

The guy on the right, was the best Prison rider, in it's state history.

considering all Angola inmates vetted and scrutinized for having high character and morals prior to being accepted, I would think that it would be unlikely

Leave early or leave very late. It's like going to a LSU game

Everything in this country is rigged.

inmates shying away can probably be attributed to going head to head with a 1800 pound, pissed off bull. but the winners nut up and compete because this is their Super Bowl, every Sunday in October
