SMU looking at June Jones

If anyone is interested:

Seems like a good choice if they could get him considering he hasn't signed and Hawaii continues to do things on the cheap.

SMU is interested in Hawaii coach June Jones as its new football coach, according to a source with knowledge of the school's search.
The interest may help explain why SMU is still looking for a coach despite firing Phil Bennett on Oct. 28.
Jones has led Hawaii to a 12-0 record and the Allstate Sugar Bowl – one of five Bowl Championship Series games – against Georgia on Jan. 1 at the Louisiana Superdome.
A Hawaii spokesman could not be reached Monday evening, though as recently as last week, SMU had not asked Hawaii for permission to speak with Jones. SMU has declined comment on candidates while its search is ongoing.
Jones is known for his prolific run-and-shoot offense that helped quarterback Colt Brennan become a Heisman finalist this season. He is 76-40 in nine seasons at Hawaii.
Prior to revamping the Warriors in 1999, Jones spent 12 years in the NFL, including head coaching jobs at Atlanta and San Diego.
Jones, who spent part of his collegiate career playing at Hawaii, was also an assistant with the Houston Oilers.
SMU athletic director Steve Orsini has raised around $10 million for the new coach and staff.
SMU, which has had only two non-losing seasons since 1989, has also reportedly interviewed former Miami coach Larry Coker and had contact with former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione.
Former Navy coach Paul Johnson interviewed in Dallas days before accepting the Georgia Tech job.

Also heard on ESPN sometime during the night that SMU was offering 2 mil/year for the job. Sounds like they are serious about getting their program out of the sewer.

I have to say, just me now, that the only reason I would leave UH is for the money, or go to a BCS that has a legitimate shot at an MNC. There is no way I could be talked out of leaving Hawaii for SMU unless they were offering an outrageous amount of money. Just me though.

Anything is possible but I can't see JJ leaving Hawaii, he loves living there...

Anyone remember Jeff George screaming on the sideline at JJ in Atlanta? Dont remember the details, but remember it wasnt long after that and JJ was gone.
Wasnt it a scandal that broke SMU up? I dont recall what went down...just remember in the 80s that was like the RB University. I quit watching FB in like 83 or 84(other than big games and some Wolverine games) until about 89 I think.

Yes, that's because at that point, it was easier to get rid of the coach than the QB.

They got the Death Penalty for doing what a lot of schools did then and do now.

If you were a recruit and going to commit for four years, where would you go? Dallas or Honolulu? Easy choice…

SMU needs to look at joining another conference before they even want to start to be taken serious. It sounds as if they are serious enough to hire a coach and put them back on the map for a national championship. C-USA and National Championship are like oil and water.

If a team is interested in a coach but has not asked permission nor received permission to talk to that coach, is it really even a story. I'm sure SMU would be interested in a lot of coaches.

I went to SMU. We, apparently, are going to spend millions for the George W. Bush Presidential Library. May as well open up the vault and hire Vince Lombardi as our next Coach. Sometimes, you have to take what you can get.

Hey Clean--- it could happen. Sherwood Blount ( SMU Linebacker) was a frat bros. of mine in the early 70's. We lost to everybody except Rice. Sherwood went on to develope Galleria and other major RE deals in North Dallas. Sherwood (allegedly) got Eric Dickerson and Craig James to play for SMU. We were #2. Then death penalty because the big boys--- who do worse--- were scared that a small school could out-bid their arse. Go Poney's and the SMU BABES!
