I know the subject leads to the trashy debate on the OT, but thought we could fire up the discussion on here.

How do you all compare the general kind of ships cruising out of Nola with Carnival, RCL, and Norwegian?

I know the consensus is to avoid the 4 and 5 day cruises.

Kids are begging us to take them on a cruise and I"m not ready to drop a lot on a Disney cruise and the Alaskan cruise will have to wait a few more years. Thinking of just doing one out of Nola to see what it's all about.

I see that Norwegian is sending the Pearl to Nola starting next November and it has my interest as the boat looks nice.

I think NCL only cruises certain times of the year out of nola, and RCCL doesn't do it at all... you're pretty much stuck to those 2 lines and you just missed the $50 deposit for CCL.
I don't understand the carnival hate, you literally have to be a miserable person to not enjoy any cruise

The newest Carnival ship is very nice. Same class as being used out of the Florida terminals. Have a great time everyone else will be

NOLA often gets the older ships in the fleet.

You'd be surprised how much cheaper they are out of Galveston rather than Port Canaveral. Still, will be more then out of NOLA and will be more than the Liberty of the Seas out of Galveston but alot cheaper than out of Port Canaveral.

I've only done one cruise, and it was a 4 day Carnival cruise. It was "okay" and Cozumel was really cool, but I don't feel like I'll do another cruise. It really isn't my thing (or my wife's), as we prefer to spend more time in the locations that we travel to and like to immerse ourselves in the culture of our destinations.

Also, most of the people on our cruise seemed super trashy

Our next will be out of Florida, looks like more, or better ports... I mean if you skip the Bahamas anyway. Seems like galveston/Nola have the see ports

Carnival has a better set up for parking and getting on the boat. NCL can drive you nuts.

Plus you have to park in the Hilton garage and carry your bags a good bit.

If you are parking at the terminal I would park under the bridge for less.

The dream 7 day out of NOLA is a lot of fun.

Carnival is geared towards kids entertainment. If you find a steal of a price say $400 for a 7 day or $250 for a 4-5 day, be prepared to have more trashy people on board. Nothing a good bottle of wine and a private balcony can't fix.

All in all, it depends on what you hope to get out of it. Most people complain about having to get back on board by a certain time. I dive so I'm exhausted after several hours in port. To each their own.

For the price, it's a hard vacation to beat.

I've taken the Triumph out of NOLA in 2011 (no kids), Elation in 2013 (kids age 5 and 2) and Elation in 2015 (no kids).

For comparison, I've taken the Disney Magic for a week out of Galveston in 2015 - Thanksgiving week at that (with kids age 7 and 4)

I don't get the hate for Carnival. It's a fun time. Are there some trashy people? Sure. But that doesn't cause my vacation to get ruined... I just make fun of them. We've started looking at doing a full week cruise out of NOLA next June.

The knock on NOLA is the ports - with having to traverse the river, it cuts down on how far you can go. 4 and 5 days are only to Mexico and the 7 days really mostly western Caribbean. But I'm going to enjoy beaches and booze... not for high history lessons and fancy food.

If you are expecting a 5 star experience... then cruising out of NOLA is not for you.

exactly. The people watching can be great. Get your own balcony and enjoy drinks and brunch looking out to sea. There are plenty of things to do, and I like that you get to visit multiple ports and see if you like or don't like places before pulling the trigger on a week vacation there. I am glad cruises told me Bahamas were a shithole and that Cozumel was pretty nice.

I got to see Chitchen Itza on a shore excursion, that was awesome. I doubt I would have ever just visited there.

I did Carnival out of NOLA mid July. We went to Roatan, Belize, and Cozumel. It was the larger of the two ships out of NOLA. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There was some less desirable types, but not that many. It was an excellent itinerary. I suggest staying away from holiday periods though, as it brings out some bottom feeders. The smaller Carnival ship had some negative reviews from extended family. It also had a shorter length cruise so just be aware. IMO, 7 day cruises on Carnival out of NOLA during non holiday times is a good trip.

We try to do 2 cruises a year. Almost exclusively with Carnival because of the price and the closeness of New Orleans and Galveston. I don't let the people on board bother me at all. I just enjoy my cruise to the fullest. A cruise is what you make it.

I don't know how old your kids are. Mine are 10 and 12, we have taken 3 cruises out of NOLA with them all on Carnival. 1 was a 5 day, and the other 2 7 day. They both loved them. If they got to pick they would probably choose to cruise every year as a vacation. If it was up to me I would take them when other kids are in school and let mine skip. However, my wife doesn't like that idea so we go when most of the kids are out of the school and there's a good but of kids on the ship. It never really bothered or stopped us from doing anything.

I have heard that RC is a little nicer and NCL is a little lower class than Carnival. I don't have any experience with either one however.

Do the Carnival Dream 7 day to Roatan/Belize/Cozumel. Great cheap cruise, especially with kids. Not having to worry about flights and how to get to terminal from airport is HUGE when you have kids. Camp Carnival will supervise the little ones while you get drunk in the adults-only area or hang out by the crowded pool discretely checking out the women (aka "people watching"). If the dinner menu looks meh on any particular day, then make a reservation at the steakhouse, which is an extra charge but worth it. It also helps to be mentally prepared for crowded common areas, slow elevators, expensive drinks, and some trashy folks.

But for the ballers with time off here's what I would do:

Crystal
Kids sail free on this particular cruise as well. The only downside about Crystal (beside cost) is that you will never be completely happy with any other cruise line again. Pardon the brag, but here's what wife and I are doing for our 10 year anniv: Croatia

This is the next one we are looking at (no kids). My FIL retired last month, so that is a huge boost for our ability do do kid-less vacations. Love my kids but need some couple time as well.

We are trying to decide between this cruise, and a 5 day trip to a resort in Cabo that some of my wife's friends are going on. Reminds me - I need to post a thread for that.

The last Carnival one we went on, several of the ladies in the Serenity area were wearing very nice skimpy thong swimsuits. I'm pretty sure my wife caught me staring but she didn't say anything.

Wouldn't an all-inclusive make more sense if you're going for beaches and booze?

I'd be okay with going to an all-inclusive trip with a few couples as "couples" vacation or a family vacation, but I wouldn't really go to one of those with just my wife.

Of the 2 cruise lines you mentioned, I've only cruised Carnival. RCCL is my choice of cruise line. I will never cruise Carnival again. They screwed me once and I'm done. RCCL is much nicer and better clientele. I don't cruise out of NO anymore. I've done Cozumel and Jamaica enough times to recognize past tour guides. Port Canaveral is nice especially for Virgin Islands. I've never had a "bad" cruise. Not even on Carnival.
