Alumnus >>>> native of state

Even though, Coach Rod was also an alum. But places like Michigan don't call you every day.

In what regard?

He was the OC for one of the worst offenses in the country this year and has been a head coach for as many games as my cat has.

If Terry Bowden gets a good staff, he'll do quite well (as his father and his brother have shown).

Yes, but no longer in the studio. Replaced by Aaron Somebody? and now Doug Flutie.

Actually, I think I was underestimating his performance as a head coach. He's always had a "bleh" reputation to me, but after checking out the stats he actually performed reasonably well until he skipped town half way through a season.

He did not skip town- he was run out of town. I don't hold that against him, frankly. If Saban and now Petrino can behave as they do, it is high time the jury decalres that Terry Bowden had paid his dues. He will be a good coach again, I predict.

I think I posted on this once before, but the reason Bowden left in the middle of the season is this:

He asked for assurance that he would return in 1999 as the head coach at Auburn, because there were rumors floating around that he would be let go after the season. Auburn does not discuss contract issues during the season - never has, regardless of the coach (see Tuberville this year). When Bowden was told that his employment status would not be discussed until after the season he resigned and walked away from the program.

Yes, he may have been fired, but he chose to leave the program in the middle of the season.

Another Bowden to continue the family tradition of mediocrity and hype

Painful and true.

I can't believe that Terry was offered our HC job.

I've really haven't seen any thing in Terry at least that impresses me, and of course Daddy B is killing Fl ST football faster than I could have ever imagined.

And I thought that Broyles was bad...jeez

YOu may have caught me in a semantics error amigo; however, there is no doubt that our AD was courting Terry Bowden to take our job. Our BOT refused to back the hire, and an official 'offer' was never tendered.

I'm happy that this didn't happen. No disrepect, but TB is not a coach I ever wanted at Arkansas

I can't stand him....IMO he is slime...I feel sorry for any school that ever gets him to coach their team....(even if it is a jr. high)

Well, I'm much happier with the 'slime' we hired, over the one we didn't.

PJ, is there more to the story? I have always heard rumors that he had an affair with a wealthy booster's daughter, he was chased out of town and Auburn forbade him to speak on the topic or to work as a coach for x number of years. I am not saying any of these are true, but your version of the Bowden affair is the "cleanest" I have seen.

MN Tiger, there are a lot of different rumors that were floating around Auburn in the days, weeks and months after Bowden left. One of the more popular rumors were that Bowden had an affair with his secretary and that the secretary was the daughter of Bobby Lowder - the president of Auburn's Board of Trustees and one of the most prolific donors to the school.

Lowder is president of Colonial BancGroup, which is the parent company of Colonial Bank, as well as a holding company for several large shopping malls in Alabama, and I believe also a real estate holding company. It is my strong belief that any of Lowder's children would be working in positions at one of the Colonial companies - not working as secretary to the head football coach. I have no idea, but that is my own honest opinion. Also, the Auburn gameday programs list (with name and photo) virtually everyone involved in the Auburn football program - from staff at the ticket office to pilots - and I don't ever recall seeing anyone connected to the Lowder family listed.

After Bowden left, there was some very bad blood between him and the University. I believe that the University felt that he had broken the terms of the contract and as such was not entitled to any compensation. Bowden argued that he was going to be fired and was owed a settlement by the school. Auburn finally settled to avoid a lengthy court case, but one of the terms of the settlement was that the checks from Auburn were to stop after X number of years or whenever Bowden took a job as coach at another institution. Again this is my opinion, but I believe that he worked at ABC for the length of the settlement terms and once the money stopped coming from Auburn, he began looking to get back into the coaching ranks.

There are only a select few that know the real truth of the matter, and I doubt they will ever be open and honest regarding the incident. As an Auburn alum, I would like to think that what occured was the clean version and not the salacious stories that were going around campus at that time.
