Why did Etling leave Purdue?

oops, wrong button.
I'm really surprised at just how good Etling looks out there. I mean, with Mettenberger, it was quickly clear that he had a cannon arm, but very little awareness in the pocket. Other guys, you see a rag arm, or they're small. Still others, you see wild inaccuracy at times.
This isn't a shot at any other QB on our roster, I just don't understand how a kid like Etling would start a season, and then lose his spot and have to transfer from Purdue, unless it was just totally his decision that he went to the wrong place.

He was on a very shitty team and was thrown to the wolves. Bad situation.

Because he struggled and got benched.
Edit: also similar to what others here said, the team was terrible, no one could save it.

Someone posted an article the other day from a Purdue site. It basically said that Shoop(his OC at Purdue) had a scheme that was way too complicated for a team with a terrible OL and absolutely no running game. The guy went through 3 QB's in 3 years before they finally got rid of him. Etling was also a freshman.

He had to play too soon and threw a lot of yards and lot of picks playing from behind a lot. Think Jarrett Lee as a freshman. And likewise he developed and got better.

Oh, I can get why he might not want to be on a bottom-dwelling team, I just don't see the holes in his game that would lead to losing his starting spot once he's entrenched as the starter.
Not ragging Harris or anyone else, just as comparisons:
Etling is not a small kid, like Harris looked (and still does at times). Looks to be average sized.
Awareness in the pocket. He did have that one fumble against Jacksonville St when hit from behind, but that looked like rust- last night he sure seemed to feel the blindside pressure and slide away from it. His improv pass to the underneath receiver (Was it Guice or Chark), where he shoved the ball out, looks like something you can't teach, you have to do that by feel.
This was the part of the game that you could watch Mett struggle with, and say "ok, now I see why Georgia let him go, despite the arm. He's gonna get killed out there someday".
Arm- I thought I heard he had a rag arm. The deep pass to Chark looked plenty good enough. He didn't rear back, that was natural delivery.
Reminded me of when the Saints first got Brees, and the fear that he would lack armstrength after the injury. He came out throwing 30 yd passes without hanging them up, and you quickly realized his arm was "good enough". Same here, Etling might not throw it 70 yds in the air, but it looks like he can throw any pass in the playbook.
Athleticism- he looks to be plenty fast out there, for a pocket QB. He's not some lumbering guy who can't get to the corner, he looks like he can definitely roll out and pick up yds if needed.
Again, I can understand him wanting to leave a 2-10 program. What I wonder is this- how does he lose his spot in the first place? Did Purdue try to implement some offense that he totally doesn't fit? Because otherwise, I'd say he'd be one of the few bright spots you have on your roster, and try to shore up the offense around him for upcoming seasons.

He lost his job as a true sophomore due to int issue playing on awful team with no running game and no OL.
Harris can throw the 70 yard pass but can't throw the 0-10 yard pass so ill take someone that can accurately throw the 0-10 yard pass and accurately throw the 50 yard pass

Read Advocate article in Saturday's sports section. I found it interesting that the QB that beat Etling now plays backup at FSU.

Because he wasn't good enough and lost the job

He was not very good, was developed by LSU coaches.

Appleby is at UF I thought...

correct. Former purdue QB is at UF not FSU. With del rio getting injured yesterday we just my have two purdue transfer QBs squaring off in the swamp.
Etling also had injury issues at purdue. Believe he tried to come back too soon and had problems producing when he returned.
