Because it's a perversion of the Christian religion.

Christianity is not supposed to be a business. Yes, pastors and other staff who run the day-to-day operations of the church need to be compensated so they can live. But keeping outrageous sums of money for yourself rather than using it for the betterment of the community is so far from what Jesus taught that it's not even funny.

The seeking of earthly possessions is the antithesis of Christian belief. Even if Osteen (and other preachers) are making their money from books, dvds, etc. they are still setting an example that personal financial success is the goal of life.

Well a church is supposed to be a non profit, right....

Just curious what are thoughts on charities like Wounded Warriors, etc... that get berated in the media and on here about where their donated money goes

I'll never understand the appeal of a mega-church.

This isn't just a "there's some good and some bad in everything." These people are running an obvious scam and taking advantage of dumb and desperate people while using a loophole to disguise themselves as a nonprofit so that they can avoid taxes. To a person with any amount of integrity or intelligence it is disgusting.

I think it depends on the type of leader. With that said, what type of person makes a better leader? Someone who people can relate to or someone who makes them feel inferior?

That thing would be awesome on some plantation property. Looks weird as frick next to a road like that though

I guarantee it was put there on purpose. It's river road and a corner lot pulling into Ormond Plantation in Destrehan. It's only a few lots down from several other plantation style houses that are set back with a large yard but something tells me Mr.Duplantis isn't concerned with modesty.

ts hard for me to believe half of these people believe the crap they preach.

I think joel osteen is so successful because he preaches more about being a better to person and doing the right thing, as it relates to real life.

For these mega churches, it’s a totally different animal. People donate from across state lines to a church they just watch on TV. That blows my fricking mind.

Fear and greed mixed together make people do all sorts of incomprehensible things. And believe all sorts of ignorant things as well. A tale as old as time.

At one time the whole documentary was available, I can only find summaries of it. Either way, I thought it was interesting.

You conveniently ignore all the good that these mega churches do. Sounds to me like you're saying, "they have made a lot of money so they must be evil."

So at what point do you give away every extra dollar that you make? I'm betting it doesn't happen.

I promise you I am no fan of the prosperity gospel. But at the same time, I won't condemn any man for being prosperous. Joel Osteen and every other mega-church pastor is every bit as human and flawed as the pastor of my 200 member church down the road.

Interesting you phrase it like that. "All the good that these mega churches do." I never criticized the church, which I define as a community of people living out the mission of the Gospels. I'm sure there are many wonderful people who work for and follow Osteen's church.

I'm questioning Osteen himself as a Christian leader.

I don't condemn people who make lots of money just because they make lots of money. It's what they do with it that matters.

Osteen is supposed to be a Christian leader, yet sets the example that life's goal is to surround yourself in luxury and comfort. That doesn't necessarily make you a bad person. It's just not the life of Christ. This is probably the most emphasized concept of the gospels.

Indeed, I'm sure I could do better. Thank you for helping me consider my own shortcomings.
