Legitimate argument can be made for this.

Not sure there is a GOAT. But my list of nominees would include:
Slaughterhouse 5
Hamlet
The Road
For Whom the Bell Tolls
A Prayer for Owen Meany
1Q84
The People of the Book

Probably mine.
A Wrinkle in Time was also one of the first books I recall loving. First "can't put it down" book I ever read. I guess I was 12?

Best: The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama
Worst: atlas shrugged, animal farm. It's a shame those right wing propaganda "novels" are actually required by some schools

Tossup between...
1632 by Eric Flint
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
....both barely edging out the Twilight series (too hard to choose just one)

I will be honest, I read the first one.. I wouldn't call it the GOAT.

Old man and the sea is terrible. A whole book that could have been condensed into 2 pages
Hemingway wasn't exactly known for being extremely "wordy". And it's not like the book was very long in the first place. I don't love The Old Man and the Sea, but come on.
Not saying it's the best ever at all, but the only book I keep going back to read every few years is The Catcher in the Rye.

It may not be the GOAT, but Animal Farm is pretty damn relevant right now.

House of Leaves, so unsettling.

Browsing through these lists, I can't believe I have never read Catcher in the Rye or Confederacy of Dunces. I just ordered both on amazon.
...and Huckleberry Finn is the greatest piece of American literature.

When I read this in 4th grade I just thought it was a story about some animals. I read it again in college and it made sense..

Catcher in the rye is good and when I was younger I know doubt related to Holden. But Confederacy of Dunces is absolutely great still and I just read it again earlier this year. It's like we all know someone like Ignitious in NOLA and the underbelly of the city is captured accurately as anyone could put it, but it's all wrapped up in a comedy.

I had no idea about the author's back story. Apparently he committed suicide, and his mother found the manuscript in his room and took it to a publisher. He received a posthumous Pulitzer.
