He said it looks like Michigan will not hire until sometime in January. I really don't understand why they are having such a difficult time filling that job.
Posted on 12/14/07 at 8:25 am to Tigerark
Because they feel someone should work for $1.5m or less for the honor of being the coach at Michigan.
Posted on 12/14/07 at 8:26 am to neweuquol
Quite obvious they are going after a NFL cood.
Posted on 12/14/07 at 8:27 am to guttata
I wonder who they are going after?

Does anyone think it might be Kiffin? I know he was brought up a lot for the Arkansas job.

there's also the issue having to deal w/lloyd's assistants and whether or not the new staff would have to keep them on for another year.

yeah I agree with the NFL assumption...but I like the Marvin Lewis rumors. if he gets canned from the bengals i could see it happening.

Or John Fox...he might get canned from the Panthers...

I hear they've contacted Byron Scott.
Posted on 12/14/07 at 9:29 am to KennerFan
they are waiting for after the NC game
Posted on 12/14/07 at 9:30 am to KennerFan
Why in world wait till January. Does that mean we have hear Les Miles being a canidate for the Michigan job.

I think the Les to Michigan will heat up closer to gameday if that hire is not made the first week of Jan. Chicken, John Fox would be an interesting hire. I did not think of him but he could be a good pick up if he gets canned.

Maybe there is another reason: (from www.mgoblog.com)
Let me give you an example of my "sources." I blog a little bit and have two people that are closer to the action than I am. One is a brother of a prominent former player who I went to school with and the other is a former Michigan sportscaster who is a friend and in tight with one member of the Michigan staff.
The first guy told me that Miles was a done deal before Sailing Bill became Sailing Bill and the sportscaster has told me all along (starting after the Horror) that Meyer would very seriously consider Michigan, that he admires the program BIG time. And that all was not well in Florida.
Meeechigan Dan[i]
If Lloyd has any input, then Meyer is on the list. He likes Meyer, his best bud/confidant Mike Debord likes Meyer. And the rumors persist that Meyer is not happy with Foley or the FLA administration. He may have a good team, but his bosses' interference might have reached a breaking point.

Who knows the truth, but Foley certainly has a reputation as one of the best, if not the best AD in the country. I would be surprised if Meyer left Florida for Michigan, but anything is possible.

Don't know Foley. But public perception and private reality have know to be divergent entities on more than one occassion.
Here is another tidbit:
i'm a student here, i have a few friends on the team, one who i went to high school with and i'm particularly close with, and they arn't being told anything other than it's going to be a big name guy. it's going to be a bcs guy that i can assure you"

i'd be very surprised to see Meyer leave UF this year. His team will probably start the year top 5 with the Heisman trophy winner returning. UF has as good as shot as anybody at winning the MNC next year. Michigan can't offer that.
And, if he left, who would Tebow cry with after losses?

bcs guy
They talking about a guy who is in the BCS this year? B/c Urban is not coaching in a BCS bowl this year. And wouldn't that be weird. he's playing Mich and then he goes there?? But since Mich AD is going to be there at the bowl game, i could see them talking to Urban about it.
I remember when we played Iowa in the Cap One Bowl, Skip talked to Kirk Ferentz.
I just don't see it happening with Urban. Mich is going to have to come off some bucks to get him.
or a guy who coaches in a BCS conference?
Or a guy who has coached in a BCS bowl before??
I guess only time will tell.

He may not come at all, as you say, his team is loaded.
But he also knows that the Mich job, after this hire will be closed for a while (it was the same thing that Miles saw - Bo 21 years, Moeller 6 years, Carr 13 years - Mich does not change coaches often). So does he make a decision based on the next one,two or three years? Or, does he make a career decision?
Or maybe he doesn't want it at all!

Meyer could stay at UF for the next 10 years. Especially if he continues to compete for the SEC every year and gets them close to the MNC every 3-5 years.

True that message is open to intrepretation, I read it as they are not hiring a I AA guy or mid-major guy. It could also be looked at as saying that they are getting a top end guy. But that is a stretch, since the message is not clear on what BCS means.
As to the bucks, well Mich has plenty:
$7 million in annual surplus in athletic dept. and that without the new stadium revenues, plus a Meyer or other top hire would spur donor $$'s, licensing revenues, apparel contract revenues, booster meeting revenues....really the sky is the limit.
Mich will be spending some quality time with Meyer in the run-up to the Cap One Bowl, so anything is possible.
