Any towing? Budget? Sorry if I missed it.

Grand Cherokee is direct competition. Don't get me wrong, the 4Runner is one of the better SUVs you can buy. But it's not perfect, and it's not above criticism.

A unibody design, and nobody offroads new Grand Cherokees. They are the same as new Range Rovers, they have all the gizmos but at the end of the day thats not what they are made for anymore. My point still stands, there is no direct competition to the 4Runner for its offroad capability and reliability. If you want to buy an SUV buy a real one, if you want to ride on a cloud then buy a luxury car.

I've have a 2014 JGC Overland for about 9 months now. Love it.

I would absolutely get that over the Explorer if you ever plan on going off road.

Explorers are really just big CUVs these days so if you actually need it to tow or go offroad you aren't going to be able to do it like you could w/the older ones.

this guy currently drives an infiniti car and takes a couple of "hunting" trips per year. Probably works in an office building in the middle of the city. he doesn't need a real SUV with towing capability, he wants a comfy ride to keep his hemorrhoids happy while driving.

Well that's not true.

Do I rock crawl in mine? Hell no.

But do I take it in areas that require 4WD and the ability to make it through tougher terrain? Yep.

Yea, and so many people are taking their $45k 4Runners off road.

Range Rovers annihilate 4Runners offroad. You're a 4Runner fanboy. Nothing wrong with that, I get it. My gen 3 was one of the better vehicles I've ever owned. But they aren't perfect vehicles.

This. You can do things in a fresh off the showroom floor on street tires Range Rover that you'd be nervous to do in a built Jeep.

The 4Runner has one of the biggest offroading communities out there, and you really think the new Range Rovers are better off road? they have 22 inch wheels, rubber band tires and no offroad enthusiast owns one. I said they have all the electronics and aids to help offroad but nobody uses them or buys them for that purpose, 99.9% of them will never leave the pavement.
And im not a total fanboy, I dont even own a new 4Runner, im just saying people try to compare apples to oranges. Just because the advertisers call something an SUV doesnt mean they are all the same or even similar.

It's not even a question.

You'd do better to just stop while you only sound mildly ignorant.

I'm on my second Ford Explorer and I've loved both of them. Other members of my family have had them as well.

Do yourself a favor: test drive a KIA Sorento with the V6, no 3rd seat.

Lots of room, great power and you can get one fully loaded for less than what you'd spend on some other makes.

A lot of people will recommend a 4Runner but it depends on what you want in a SUV.. If you want offroad, then 4Runner... if not, then something else... I looked at the 4Runner, Toyota is really proud of them. Also, I was disappointed to find them cramped and lacking in towing capacity. Gas mileage isn't all that great either. They're a rugged vehicle but the question is whether you need that. you might want to check out the Durango too... that one is bigger, has great gas mileage and better towing capacity than the 4Runner...good luck...

No boat or anything to tow. The only thing I may have to tow would be a uhaul trailer.

As for budget, I'm looking to spend between $30-45k, depending on if I buy new or used.

The TRD supercharger I installed by myself in my driveway on my gen 3 begs to differ.

You should easily be able to buy a nice SUV for that... as long as you don't try to buy a large luxury model...
