I don't deer hunt, but I've often heard people argue that those who use crossbows (sans people who use them due to handicap) rather than compound bows are poor sports. What say the OB?

I never understood that but then again the hunting groups are very fragmented into what they think is sporting or not.

A hunter using a crossbow during rifle season is no biggie, I think an able bodied hunter using a crossbow during archery season may catch some grief. As long as you're killing deer/hogs and using the meat, I don't think it really matters what you use as long as it's ethical.

Meh.

Crossbows are big and heavy and cumbersome as hell. If someone wants to use that, fine. It's legal. I just like bow hunting to be in a climbing stand and having to draw/hold makes it that much more fun. I prefer a compound.

I guess it was how I raised and what mentality I had. Successful bow hunters always seemed to be way closer to what a "hunter" should be. You had to have a good obscure stand placement, scent control, and know the Deere movement to be able to get 25-35 yards or closer to a trophy buck that's not yet distracted by the scent of a hot doe. Pretty big accomplishment in my opinion.

My experience with crossbow hunters was limited until recently. We have a crossbow hunter that hunts with us now and I'm not the least bit impressed. He hunts out of box stands meant for rifle hunting and places a feeder 50 yards out but can easily shoot farther. I know these shots can be made with a compound bow but that also takes skill. This fat arse goes out in shorts and flip flops, sits in a box stand, and still has shot opportunities.

Is he wrong for it? No. Guess not. It's legal and allowed. It really all comes down to if a hunter is wanting to challenge himself and impress others or if he is happy with taking the easy road

I've used both. The speed and sights of crossbow make the shot very easy. With that being said its still tough to get the animals that close. IMO there's nothing like drawing back and letting an arrow fly through an animal though.

I much rather the compound bow over a cross bow at this time because I am able to use a compound bow. When I get older and can no longer draw it back, then I will probably go to the cross bow at that time.

Nothing beats having everything come together and send that rage through the cage!!

I shoot a recurve, longbow, compound, and crossbow.
I shoot my compound the most and have never killed anything with the other 3.
I enjoy them all,but probably the longbow the most.
Missed a few with the traditional though. Still fun.

I use a compound. Personal pref.
Crossbows are popular with meth heads and botards.

Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and the Busbice boys shoot crossbows, pick your side.

You can hunt with whatever you want. Just don't call hunting with a crossbow "bow hunting". It's not the same thing. It's rifle hunting without the range.
