This is why we have too many people going to college...plenty of people live great lives without degrees. Also plenty of people with degrees aren't as successful as people without degrees.

This is a TERRIBLE myth that needs to be done away with.

I wish it would cost more, so the value of my degree would increase...
But really, I'd be okay with school if it was much cheaper, but also much harder to gain entry. You want free school? Okay, you have to have a 3.7+ GPA and a 25+ your ACT. You can't get in with scores or a GPA lower than that.

If we were to adopt the Bernie plan for college this is the only route in which it would work. I could actually get on board with free college if they gave it to deserving students.
We can't be giving free rides to people with 19 ACT scores and 2.5s. Just look at TOPPS.

Heck, I have a graduate assistantship that pays all of my tuition. However, I pay $1,330 each semester in fees. That amount has to then come out of my meager stipend.
My son is at ULL this fall for his first semester ... his fees listed were more than the tuition. Here is a portion of the listed fees that he showed me:
Z008 I D Photo $10.00 (I get you need an id but not a new photo every semester??)
Z009 LA Louisian - Alumni$2.50 (He's not alum yet)
Z010 Debate $1.00 (Why does every student have this?)
Z011 Entertainment $5.50 (???)
Z012 Day Care $2.25 (yeah, he's not using this)
Z013 Intramural $2.00 (I get this)
Z014 Student Loan Fee $0.50 (for what??)
Z015 Southwest Review - Book $0.10 (No clue what this is)
Z016 KRVS Radio $0.50 (He won't listen but I get it)
Z017 Vermilion Newspaper $2.00
Z018 SGA Scholarship $0.75 (why are students paying into this?)
Z019 International Student Council $0.35 (?? He's very American)
Z020 Club Sports - Other $1.65
Z021 Club Sports - Ski Team $1.00 WHY?????
Z022 Club Sports-Spirit Group $0.50 WHY?????
Z023 Police $1.00 (I get this .. only $1??)
I get a lot of it ... but some I just can't see.

It depends on the job field you're going into with the degree. Some areas of employment you get a great return on what you'll pay for a degree.
We have a rapidly growing bubble of middle-class jobs that are requiring degrees that really shouldn't require degrees. When even a secretarial position requires "at least" an Associates Degree, there's an issue. If it is a job that can be successfully done without a degree, then people shouldn't have to fork over thousands of dollars for a degree.
Society has adopted this stigma that someone is of lesser intelligence if they forgo college for a viable job in the workplace. And that's supported by companies that feel like they have to ask for a degree on a resume. Add to it an absorbent amount of degree holders who cannot find jobs in their fields and that just complicates things.
I think there's a good portion of people that are getting ripped off. But it's not just the fault of the college/universities.

That's the problem. Most people can't "pay their way" through college these days with rising costs. I'm going part-time while working full-time and sustaining a household. I've been able to supplement with scholarships but I definitely couldn't cover out of pocket those classes plus the books and fees and still live on my own.

It should be more or else JBE and F King will have to cancel football season.

Absolutely not. Increase in tuition greatly outpaces inflation IMO due to the increase of spending power provided by easy student loans.

FEWER people.
The federal government handing out student loans like candy is fueling this fire. Bernie Sanders' plan would throw gas on it.

Yes. It should. Although books should cost less.
Also, not everyone should go to college and this country should take pride in plumbers, mechanics, electricians, builders, etc...
Shitting on blue color jobs and the end of trade schools and shop class is ruining this country.
A kid tells a teacher he's interested in building and fixing cars, what will the teacher do? Encourage him to seek a job as a mechanic, tell him that's a respectable profession, and tell him to do what he likes? No. She'll berate him and all mechanics and tell him to go to college like he's supposed to.
So dumb.

When it comes to education it seems the administration grows at a faster rate than enrollment. Bureaucracies are not very diligent when it comes to budgeting. Add to that problem all of the "worthless" degrees that qualify people to serve coffee or work in the DMV.
Does an engineering degree cost the same as an art history degree? How many years does it take to pay back both degrees if 100% was done on student loans? I am guessing it take 8-10 more years to pay back the art history degree, if not longer.

That is what happens when there is no competition for students and the ease of getting the government to provide students loans to virtually everyone. Government providing colleges with guaranteed payment of debt thus they can charge what they want and fill their quota.

The cost of a college education is way out of hand. It has turned into a big business for the colleges/universities.
