I was thinking about this. First, El never physically goes to upside down world. Everyone else does because they physically walk through a gate/portal. El's physical body is in the tank & pool every time, so she never physically goes there. She enters a trance and enters a void (for lack of a better term) subconsciously or in a dream like state. Where El goes is pitch black other than the target she is trying to locate. It isn't like the upside down world that everyone else experiences that is based on where they live with trees, buildings, etc. Their version is more of a parellel dimension. El's version is more like a blank nothing other than the target that she is trying to find.

So one of my theories is what if El actually created the monster. Not on purpose or anything. But she is already in a dreamlike trance once she is submerged in the tank, so all of her fear & anxiety combined with her powers create this nightmare type creature in her subconscience that is lurking in the shadows every time they send her to this "void." When she panics after touching it that one time, not only does her freak out cause enough energy to rip open a hole between the real world and a parellel dimension, but it also pulls this monster out of her subconscience and into real life.

That could explain why the monster couldn't be defeated until she chose not to be afraid of it anymore. It was her own fear that created it, it could only be her standing up to it that could kill it. Also when she apologizes to the boys for being the monster, maybe she actually did mean that literally if she finally understood where it came from - her own fear.

I by no means think that is what happened. Just a "what if" I threw out to my old lady after we finished the series tonight.

And maybe upside down world didn't become dark and twisted looking until it was tainted by the monster? That has nothing to do with El creating the monster theory, just another theory on why the parellel dimension is straight out of a Silent Hill video game. Once subjected to this evil, it becomes tainted.
