Boat speedometer - do they ever work well?

Third boat; third one with a speedometer that does not register. I could probably clean the pitot hole on the F115, or look for kinks in the tube; but will it even be accurate once it is "working"? I have GPS on the Humminbird, which is probably more accurate.
I'm considering ditching the speedometer and putting a stereo in the gauge hole.
What is the OB's experience with boat speedometers? Anybody ever replace it with a round stereo?

What do you need a speedometer in a boat for? Really? Only "speed limits" I've ever seen are the "no wake speed" signs.

When it comes to boats the speedometer, fuel gauge, and trailer lights almost never work.

Boat speedos are not accurate and unreliable.
Stay with your GPS / and yes the radio install is quite simple for the round hole.

just cut the tube off and use your GPS
speed over ground is what you want anyway

That's what I said.

Agree, most just use GPS speed, and I only look at it for performance issues, anymore..TWSS

That's slick.
Speedometers on most boats are useless now that they pretty much all have GPS
Any modern boat without GPS likely doesn't care what kind of time it's making anyway

Yeah, that kicker is pretty slick.
our boat's speedo worked for about 3 days when we first got it. never worked again after that. I dont really care to know how fast im going sometimes.

fishing boats I've never cared. Ski boats I do. dual pitots in my old boat, one seemed to read pretty accurate, one was always off. Then were both adjustable so I could zero the "good" one with GPS at the speed we skied at. Current boat uses a paddle wheel speedo and its pretty good.

My new boat has the yamaha digital gauges and its even with my gps until 40-ish mph and then its about 1-2mph fast.
The kicker is nice. i have a sonic hub to my HDS. BT, FM/AM, Sat radio, Aux and USB. 200watts x 4. no head unit needed.

Back to the original question
Mine works. Gotta tap it to get it to register. I can pretty much go whatever speed I need by tapping it. Even while its on the trailer in my yard. Without the motor running. Hell, its probably doing about 10mph right now.

Thanks guys,
It does seem useless and I'll probably replace with a stereo soon. Music helps when the bite is slow, or when I'm not even fushing

Use your GPS for speed. Boat speedometers are for show.

I bought my bass boat brand new and the fuel gage went out in the first month. Luckily I have two gas tanks and I use one as an emergency backup too most of the time.
