As a follow-up to the up and coming cities thread, can anyone offer any input into the quality of living in Pensacola? Housing prices, crime, things to do, pros and cons, etc.

GF (no pics) and I are considering making a change and getting out of NO/LA for a few years. We are in our mid to upper 20's. Looking for places with a chemical engineering job market and close to water. Pensacola jumps out as a quiet town that has both of these, and it's not too far from home. I've been a few times and it seems like there is stuff to do, I'm just looking for input from someone our age who has lived here.

You'll need to purchase one of these and fly it outside your home to fit in.

Be prepared to be downvoted for suggesting that any Gulf Coast town could provide a better quality of life than NOLA/LA.

I have family in P-Cola working as a civilian contractor for the Navy.

They seem to love it there. Lots of beaches that are friendly to the locals.

I'd move there in a heartbeat if the right opportunity came up.

It would be best to go a few miles west just outside of Pensacola around Perdido or even further west in Gulf Shores. I grew up there, great schools and community. Can't wait to get some experience I my field so I can also get out of Nola and head back that way.

You definitely can't go wrong with Perdido, Orange beach, Gulf Shores, Fairhope, Daphne or Spanish Fort.

Do you already have a chemical engineering job in mind in the Pcola area? Not much industry in that market, especially compared to south Louisiana.

I lived there for a few years in my mid 20's....loved it!!! Moved back to Louisiana for work....Pensacola is a military town, tourism, and retirement area....not much industrial

It's a nice place to visit. Coming from NOLA has probably conditioned you to dislike tourists, you'll end up feeling the same way living in Pcola. The job market is not a booming one there outside of military/government contract work & tourism. Crime is not bad. Housing prices are cheaper than most areas, especially the further from the coast you go(obvious statement).

Basis of input/ Full disclosure:
I grew up in Pcola but left shortly after finishing HS. I've only been back a few times since graduation to visit old friends.

ETA:

I'm assuming PCola is better/nicer than Mobile?

Correct statement

They have that eastmon chemical plant nearby and we may be getting some work there. I would move in a second.

Ive only really been to Pensacola beach but the times ive driven through downtown Pensacola it seemed really nice. Dream would be to live on the beach though.

I would do the Eastern Shore (Baldwin County) or select areas around the Peniscola areola with the following caveat:

Elevation, elevation, elevation.

Ivan in 2004 was not a good experience for the area.

Lived in Pcola for a year 2011-2012 for school. Absolutely loved it during spring and summer. Not a lot going on in the winter and escambia county was I think the poorest country in Florida at the time. Certain area of downtown were pretty rough but gulf breeze was really nice. Lots to do in spring and summer if you're a beach goer. I'd move back in a heartbeat.

Good jobs are very hard to come by there but of you get one then you can live a good life especially if you like the water.

If you are by any chance a hockey fan, they have a good minor league team there. Should give you something to go see during the winter.

I live here now, and I was surprised by how much I love this place. Pcola is like the perfect size - big enough so that there's stuff to do, but not so big that it can be a challenge to live in (or raise a family in).

The beaches are nice, although fairly touristy during the summer (but you can go far enough down the beach and eventually find a less-crowded spot). Downtown and Palafox street is where it's at - tons of great restaurants and bars.

I'm actually a ChemE at one of the plants here. The area isn't bustling with opportunities like LA or TX, but they're there if you look. Pay may not be quiiiite as great as Houston or BR, but cost of living is low and the location beats the hell out of both those IMO.

I work for a manufacturing facility in the area. Just relocated here and I love it. I'm a good deal older than you and your GF, but I don't think you would have a prob with finding things to do.

As to housing, be ready to pay property tax. No state income tax so it's not nearly as bad as Texas on that front. If you want something new you might have to look outside of the city.

I have no regrets moving here.
