Anyone have any experience removing paint from brick? I hear it's a huge pain in the arse, but I have this 1,200 sq ft rental that I want to remove the paint off the exterior brick of the whole house.

From research, it seems there are DIY kits where you apply a paste to the brick, then a sticky sheet, and then peel off the existing paint. Im conflicted bc it's such as small home and might not be hard, but it looks like a hassle, and Im wondering if Im better off paying someone to do it.

Anyone have any experience, one way or another?

I wouldn't even bother doing it. It's a PITA for sure. Brick is porous and absorbs paint so trying to get all of the paint off is nearly impossible. I tried it on an inside fireplace and gave up and repainted the whole thing.

if anything paint it a different color. i can imagine paint is hard to get out of mortar. i would think blasting or grinding would be the only way to go.

The only thing I've ever heard was pressure washing it, but then you run the risk of blowing the grout it.

I heard it was impossible, but for rental they'll have to live with it.

I have used aircraft paint stripper followed by a pressure washer to do it to old bricks, but they were on the ground

Exactly this. Had the same experience. Wife wanted to remove the paint from fireplace. Was impossible. Ended up repainting

An older house we lived in growing up had this done to it. It was sandblasted and it left these small pock marks in the brick. Not worth the effort.

We used walnut shell media on a cinder block building. Stripped paint well with no discernible damage to the blocks. However,we repainted to match the house after cleaning it up.

All these new houses going up with white-painted bricks will eventually look dated and generic. Then what?

I would rather re-brick the house myself than try to remove the paint.

Every time I see one of these go up I have to scratch my head. I'm cool with painting brick if the brick is ugly, but to deliberately build it that way??

Yeah there is a brand new house in the neighborhood behind me ($350k house) with white brick. Sticks out like a very sore thumb.
